I've noticed it some days ago and wondered if I should start a thread about it too.

I hope it's coded into the program and not an update done without our permission >:|

Ah .. 2008 I was mainly using mplayer ;)

and Paws .. VLC does only connect to the update server if you allow it. You can disable all data transmissions in VLC ...
 
I noticed that yesterday. I thought it was pretty cool.
