I'm looking for a program that I can take out part of a video - just the part(s) that I want to keep. I did a Google search and found an older program called DVD Shrink, but I can't figure out how to use it.

Does anyone know how to use that program or know of a better one to use on a Windows 7 computer?

Thanks!

dvd shrink is not really for cutting videos.

you can use the windows movie maker to do that (included or you need a live id or something like that) or you can download virtual dub which is free.

Windows Movie Maker can only work with a few video formats, if you are using anything besides AVI, WMV, or MPG you will need to use a different software.

Thanks for these suggestions. I'm a bit dumb when it comes to actually doing what you're talking about. I have downloaded the virtualdub and I have movie maker, but I don't know how to use either one. The videos that I have and just want a part of are wmv and avi vids.

When I ran virtualdub, it gave me an error and said that it can't find a decompressor for format "XVID".

Get the free format converter: http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/

Convert whatever you have to a MovieMaker acceptable format and let 'er rip.

Video files: .asf, .avi, .wmv
Movie files: MPEG1, .mpeg, .mpg, .m1v, .mp2
Audio files: .wav, .snd, .au, .aif, .aifc, .aiff
Windows Media files: .asf, .wm, .wma, .wmv
Still images: .bmp, .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .jfif, .gif
MP3 format audio: .mp3

You can look at a non-destructive video editor/slicer, meaning it won't need to re-encode the segments you want to keep - it basically will just rewrite the header with new data to match the length of your clip. Try Ultra Video Splitter or VideoReDo Plus.

VirtualDub is great and can do the same thing (for AVI's for instance), but won't handle all codecs. If it's complaining about an XVID header, get the XVID codec here. Once it's installed, VirtualDub should be able to read your file if it's that format. Try setting under the Video and Audio settings to "Direct Stream Copy" for each, and you can "Mark In" and "Mark Out" to select the areas you want to keep/trim out.

Thanks guys! I'm a bit slow getting back to you, but I've been able to cut out parts of both avi and wmv vids - with your help!!

Thanks again!!
