If you've having trouble getting toys and the real deal up your butt, you probably need to use a thicker lube. Silicone lubes are great because they don't dry out as quickly as water-based lubes. However, they don't help as much when you're trying to get things started.

As long as it's a reasonably-sized, soft, flexible plug- silicone or rubber are both- it's fine to leave it in for short periods of time- not only for when you're jacking off.
