I was told this fone syncs to Mac so I plugged the USB cable into my G4 and it didn't mount. It came with disks for various microsoft OS's but not Mac. The salesman said it would sync with anything. I wanted to use it for an MP3 player.
I really wanted an iPhone but they are not available in Canada.

have you tried isync?

edit

It looks like most who have successfully connected the phone to their mac did so via bluetooth.

Hmm, I've wadded through google and came up nothing.

I should be ordering stock next week, so I'll talk to my supplier and see if he knows anything.

But, if the rep of the provider said it would work and that was a major selling point for you, I'd return it.

I used iSync with the USB cable and was able to sync my address book and could also sync calendar if I was using iCal but it appears that I may be able to do it with a card reader. Fucked by Sony again.](*,)

yours may be differant but my t650i when you plug in the usb cable comes up with a screen with 3 differant usb modes if you select the first - File Transfer mode it comes up as a mass storage device and you can just drag and drop into it

I have the W810i... Hope you get yours to work correctly... I really enjoy mine.

Most phones compatible with iSync do nothing more than update the phones' calendar and address book. See iSync Compatible Devices List for more info.

I have to bluetooth my files from iMac to SE K800i and vice versa.

You'll need bluetooth unfortunately!

According to the chart the W810i syncs address book, calendar and to-do's by usb. I can confirm this cos I synced address book. But there is no mention of music and pictures.

You use the program Sony Disc2Phone, it's in the PC Suite software that came with your phone. When you connect your phone click on the Sony Ericsson PC Suite icon on your desktop then the Sync Manager will come up then there is the button Disc2Phone but you don't have to actually do that because you can just drag and drop files into the memory stick. When your phone is plugged in select file transfer in your phone then your computer should ask you if you want to play or open the folder that is the memory stick (phone card) or the phone folders. In the phone card just click on music and make folders and then add your music. If you purchased music from an online store then you use Disc2Phone to make the license transfer so you can play your purchased mp3s. I don't know if this work with anything bought from iTunes. If you want to put videos in your phone and want them to pause/resume then make a folder in the music folder to drop your videos in then make a playlist to play them. Then you can pause a video, exit out from the walkman part and when you go back your video should resume where you paused it.
I got my phone from cingular but I'm assuming that it's all the same box and software. ..| hope this helps

I was wary of anything from Sony, a small player in the PC market. Oh well, in a worst case scenario I guess I could get an iPod. I know they work.

That's why you need to bluetooth them to your phone, as you can't transfer them via USB or iSync on a Mac.

You can make any computer (incl. Mac) bluetooth by adding a USB Bluetooth Dongle. Here's some links to providers of USB Bluetooth Dongles (that state they are Mac compatible):

U-Bop Bluetooth Dongle

Kensington Bluetooth Dongle

I've never had the option to sync music with my w810i - I always take the SD card out and stick it in the slot in my laptop and just do my bits and pieces thataway. Then when the card is loaded up I go into the Walkman menu and make my playlists. I can sync my contacts etc. no problem with a USB connection and if I want with a bluetooth connection but AFAIK even on the PC the only option I have with pics is to back them up and/or restore them.

On my old laptop I bought a bluetooth usb dongle for doing transfers/syncs - have you thought of doing that?

(*8*)

edit: @muttley - the software is for a PC and sheep has a Mac :(

My Vaio is old so it doesn't recognize the Memory Stick Duo Pro :( I'm sure there's a Sony fix but I haven't gone looking because I just connect my phone to the pc and it works that way so it's cool. I like the w810i too, it's a great little phone and it takes good pictures. When I was writing all that stuff I was like.. oh yeah.. he's got a Mac but I'm sure it would all kinda be the same? check it out ... here's something from the Macrumors forum

SE doesn't offer Mac synching software, but it's not necessary. Just plug the phone in VIA USB, or turn on bluetooth, or stick the Memory Stick Pro Duo into a card reader and transfer files. You can also use software like iTunesMyWalkman or SyncTunes to perform a more iPod-like synchronization of your music from iTunes.

 @ sheep - my w810i works just fine on my PC :p

Where's provenlogic and his fruit comments when you need him?

;)

He is doing battle with his cable/isp company. Even proven shouldn't have to put up with that;)

Ok, time for an update. When I first plugged the phone into the USB port, I was unaware that I only had 1.1. The computer is 5 years old and was designed and built before USB 2.0. However many things i have plugged into it including an iPod touch worked and a digital camera. Not the Sony fone. It mounted but not on the desktop and would not dismount. I tried from Disk Utility. No dice. Unplugging it broke my hard drive which I repaired with Disk Warrior. It wrecked the volume wrapper but was able to get it up and running again.
I then installed a USB 2 card. I was amazed when I plugged the fone in again and the same nothingness occurred. A short while later i attempted to remove eDrive from Micromat using the install disk>remove eDrive. Well guys, it removed more than eDrive, it destroyed the 250 gig Maxtor to a point Disk Warrior couldn't repair it. Luckily I had a backup one week old so all was not lost.
So, another trip to Tiger Direct was in order. I bought 2 hitachi 320 gig drives, temporarily installing one after ripping the dead one out. I transferred the data to it after doing a clean install of the system and bringing only the pref panes and preferences I needed. Everything works. I now do a backup nightly from the one drive to an identical one.
Yesterday I got the nerve to try the walkman thingie again, so I started with the backup drive and plugged it in. It mounted! I used Synctunes to move some music to it. After I dismounted it and opened the phone to music and guess what? Nothing new was there. At this point I threw the phone over to my technophobic partner and said *see if u can make it work*. After 20 minutes of beep, beep ,beep it started working. Btw it took 2 hours to d/l 1.2 gigs of mp3's to it.
So now I have some music to take with me to South Beach on Saturday.

Is it any wonder why iPods sell so well?

Thanks to all who responded to help me with this POS fone.
Case closed.:D

I plug anything into my Windows and Linux boxes and they "just work."

Hmm...

One is.

It's about 9-10 years old.

USB 1.1 is slow as hell, but it works.

I think it's a matter of OS capabilities more than the hardware's.
