for the life of me:

i can't figure out why you seem to care so much about operating systems.

its just annoying when someone says their web cam doesn't work there will be 2 or 3 posts saying buy a mac

... vs AmigaOS vs TOS vs BeOS vs QNX vs MenuetOS

BeOS has a newer version called Zeta Neo.

The biggest con to BeOS was, of course, compatibility. Zeta Neo addressed some of these issues, both in hardware and software compatibility, but there are still not enough drivers or applications or games to rate a partition IMO. Both Zeta Neo and BeOS seem to be based on a linux-like OS, but are not compatible with any linux distributions that I've ever tried.

One of the best linux distributions that I've found for those just starting out in linux is Puppy Linux. Version 2.14 can be booted from CD, and then installed on it's own partition, or booted from floppy and an image on a fat 16/32 partition. It uses Xorg for video, ALSA for sound, and has a wide selection of NIC options.

Another linux distribution that I find interesting is a tiny linux distribution called GeexBox (think XBox). It boots up (from CD or installed on the hard drive) into a video/audio multimedia appliance, which is great for giving older hardware a new life. It even works with (very few) selected TV add-in cards, allowing television viewing. A high-end pentium I notebook computer with a DVD player could be made into a stand alone dvd player. It will even find USB drives.

Another that sounds interesting is Movix, a linux distro along the same lines as GeexBox, but, as of yet, I've not been able to make it work as well as GeexBox.

Do you want to know the reason that it is pissing me off so much

no its not the fact that firefox seems a bit prone to crashing at the moment once every few days including right now ;)

it is more due to the fact that I had to work my ass off to get my new PC and the fact that it continually get bagged due to hearsay and Bullshit from people who haven't used it as an OS drives me mad

I dont do it to you guys who are using OS X so why do you do it to people using Vista

What is your dick to small or something? Overcompensating? but who am i to say its to small if it is (*8*) remember size doesn't matter ;)

as for exaggerating mine is Huge ;)

I worked my ass off even more to get my Mac. It cost more. I have no beef with vista as I haven't used it. I do have a beef with MS as I have used their software for years and am still supporting it. If I were being paid for doing this rather than doing friend a favour I might be less unhappy. It would also be nice not to have vista users constantly attacking those of us who chose to opt out. To the extent that they tell us that we are the reason they wouldn't consider a mac. Talk about noses being removed to spite faces! Still it's all good fun. I am up for evaluating and O/S's including vista if I can get a free version to try on my Mac. My laptop is not high enough spec to run it. It might manage but it would be struggling and would not do vista justice. Writing this on Puppy linux 2.16

I am sure you can get it from somewhere ;)

but like i have said most of my comments have been in direct response to someone Bagging Vista which happens all the time here show me my posts where I attack OSx as people here do with vista

and if i had the money i may have bought a mac but since i was/am a student the term working my ass off in a job with limited hours available the job is great while at uni but when i need more money well i cant get it so i basically had to give up pretty much everything for a month to save the money

I have to agree with AJ. This ongoing argument about Mac, windows, and now linux is really getting old. And it's beginning to piss me off.

I think it's important to point out the differences between OSs to help people who are considering a change, but it's not helpful to argue about them in a thread where someone is asking for help. it is also NOT helpful to say something like 'yeah get a mac' or 'switch to ubuntu' or whatever as a helpful response. switching OSs is not that easy for most people and everyone who says "yeah get ___" (insert whatever OS you want) knows that is not the type of answer the person asking for help is looking for. So...it's a pointless response.

AJ i am so with you on this.

arguments will never end until all the os become old and replaced.

I have never used linux and i won't give a try because i have read more than twice that it sucks for music production.

So at the end it depends on what you'll be doing with the pc mostly.

Me? Everyday i use my g4 running os x (panther? i think) and a vaio running win xp. Definetly i prefer os x. I got the vaio because i also use softimage's xsi which unfortunately for me is not available for os x.

In the other hand using an apple computer as a word processor or just for internet surfing is a waste of money.

Let's get a Honda vs. Toyota vs. Nissan aruguement going!!

Honestly I don't see the point in this topic, different things cater to different people.

/\ i think...AJ was trying to get people to post their issues with whatever OS in here, rather than arguing about it in every other help thread in this forum. ;)

My main comp is a imac intel core 2 duo 1 2.16 GHz 1 GB ram running OS x 4.9 with Ubuntu on a parallels set up to play with. I will be dual booting with Vista to try it out when I sort out how to decompress the .uif file.

Second Computer is laptop pc 2.4 GHz P4 512 MBram with windows XP and Puppy Linux on a stick. I mainly use Puppy on this as it is largely used for surfing the net and messenger / skype. The reason for this is the speed and reliability of booting / shutdown and the fact that the hard drive is not required. I only use XP for the progs that are not ported to the mac and require a laptop such as industrial equipment programing software eg. for alarm systems and plc's. The expense of a mac book can't be justified for these applications. My ex who lives with me has a P3 600 MHz machine with 256 MB ram with Win 98 and Puppy. Puppy gives him the plug and play that 98 doesn't and is also so quick and easy to set up on older computers as it's hardware detection and selection of drivers is much better than that of win 98.

It should be noted that Puppy is not being used to bash MS it is just better in the applications we use it for in the same way the mac and OS X is a better experience for me in the things I do but I still retain the laptop for the reasons specified. I will try vista before I make any comment on it.

For those who like modding their computers and adding loads of extra boards etc then the mac is not for them in the same way as it is not for gamers. Whilst it will run windows and the games, if that is your main interest why bother with the extra expense and an OS that you will not benefit from. Get a PC.
