its the operating system that is the problem not the hardware

It doesnt matter if you buy a PC or a Mac running Linux. It is Linux you have to worry about with viruses etc. And Linux is supposedly bullet proof.

If you want to buy a new computer just to use Linux, get a PC, unless you want to spend thousands of dollars on a computer just to use a free operating system.

I have 2 macs, 1 linux and 2 pc's. Macs and Linux machines remain virus free though I find the Macs easier and more versatile to work with. PC box and laptop got infected with Norton, managed to get rid of it but it had worn out the drive on the desktop. Windows laptop died last week. Postmortem yet to come. If I can resurrect its skeleton then it will be running Puppy linux as this is best with wireless cards over ubuntu etc.

What version of Linux would you run on a mac? I haven't found any that are mac friendly. OS X is based on the Linux kernal, but it's not a pure Linux kernal.

buy a mac and set it up so that it has both mac and linux on it and make the decision for yourself.

LOL The whole point of my posing the question was to avoid getting an infection on my new computer. To see for myself, wouldn't I have to intentionally get an infection with one OS or the other?

nope.

you have to spend some extra setup time for the mac to see the linux side of the computer. likewise for the linux.part

You might be pleasantly surprised by the speed of the mac and also the range of "free" software that is out there. I have windows in Parallels on the Mac but I almost never use it and when I do my language deteriorates and my blood pressure goes sky high!

^ is that so? Could you recommenda a good, free, easy to use picture viewer and photo editing program for the mac? It should be able to do minor corrections (red eye, adjust levels, crop/rotate pictures), and it would be perfect if it is batch processing capable.
I've been looking for something like that for some time now, but never found anything like that. I do not want a "drawing" program ... more something like IRfanview (for windows).

^ Corny, have you tried iPhoto? Does all you mention, with the possible exception of batch processing, depending on your requirements.

Personally, if I was buying a computer specifically for personal use, I'd buy a Mac. If I was buying a machine to specifically run Linux, I'd buy a cheap PC.

I use CocoViewX it will do batch resizing and EXIF info editing, rotations and the like though not editing. The Macupdate site is good for finding useful utilities.

The editor of iPhoto is ok - BUT all that database crap around it is really, really tiresome. This is for an old guy who wants to scan his old old slides. It is really difficult for him to understand the concept of folders and files and locations on your harddisk, and atop of that now he has albums, events, hidden photos and what not in iPhoto, and many changes in iPhoto don't seem to be stored to the original files. So when he burns those files on DVD to show people his pictures, the end up being upside down again or in a different order than he has them in iPhoto. And if you use iPhotos export functionality it does something with the images, too. All images where he did more than just cropping will show only black on the TV (we tried 3 different DVD players on two TVs ...).

I confess I find the way iphoto does things to be less than transparent and quite easy to fuck up. I am quite capable of organising my own files and folders where I want them and not in some bizarre database with multiple copies and aliases of the same file sprinkled liberally about the hard drive.

Its interesting to see how the mac vs pc debate (which is really mac vs microsoft) continues to play out. I am a dullard when it comes to these things, but it seems to me that it boils down to two things. One, almost everyone seems to agree that macs are more user-friendly and not as vulnerable to attacks, in part because microsoft is so much bigger and therefore a bigger target.

On the other hand, people seem to agree that there are just more options with a pc/windows.

I guess there is that third issue of agreement - macs are expensive.

All that said, eventually these products have to merge, not literally, but I mean they must adopt those characteristics of its competitor that make it attractive. This is already happening. But if windows were more secure and stable, and more user-friendly, it would be hegemonic. On the other side, if Apple continues to expand applications, functionality, and lowers prices as marketshare expands, it could seriously challenge windows.

The competition should be good for us consumers.

corny, if you pay attention in the folder where iphoto puts its files you'll see the orignal pics AND the modifies ones.

Anyway if you wanna burn them just do it from iphoto! Or DRAN AND DROP from Iphoto the files you wanna burn. EASY!!!

As I said .. we burn the files off iPhoto, the modified files end up being all black on the tv screen. And this *still* does not resolve the need for the stupid database-event-album-ordering arranging whatever in iPhoto. But I guess that's a mac's userfriendly-ness :)

Keeland the program sounds just fine but - it's not for free. the (old) guy is very careful about buying stuff online, and he said he never wants to pay for an english language program ;) (he accepts them for free though ;) )
It seems that good mac freeware is really rare ..
