I am in no way suggesting that is true, But someone on imdb.com posed the question. "Is Madonna or Britney Spears the modern version of Edith Piaf?". There are over 100 posts of people LAMBASTING both Madonna and Britney, saying they are nowhere near Edith at all. And apparently Edith is France's national singer by some of the posters. But finally someone even said comparing Madonna to Britney is ludicrous. So what are people's thoughts?

Voice wise, Madonna is probably better than Britney, but Piaf would destroy them both.

I don't really like Britney or Madonna, but Madonna is probably in a much higher league than Britney. As some critic noted (can't remember who) her new album wasn't sung by her, it was just a Britbot!

Madonna should not be mentioned in the same sentence with Bricknees!
(sp intended)
M(!)adonna has class, and also can sing!

I am French; and it would never ever have crossed my mind to think of Madonna or Spears as a modern-day Edith Piaf. Some of this has to do with the way in which Piaf transcended all social categories and boundaries. Madonna and Spears both have a larger audience and, of course, are more widely known, but neither is thought to be a symbol of the United States in the way that Piaf is a symbol of France. Ironically, I would have thought that the early (pre-Bobby Brown) Whitney Houston comes much, much closer to being like Edith Piaf. If I remember correctly, she was once considered a national treasure owing to nothing more than the extraordinary quality of her voice and its power to move the listener. And that is the proper parallel to Edith Piaf. Sometimes in France, individuals here and there will listen to Houston sing America's national anthem just to hear the marvelous quality of her voice. In precisely the same way, Piaf's singing of France's national anthem has a power that is without equal.

erm.. i think your use of the term ludicrous pretty much covers it , nick

Although I don't agree, I get people's point about this. In my opinion, Britney and Madge are nowhere near Edith Piaf when it comes to vocal talent--especially lyrical interpretation and emotion. But, when you say the words "french singer" to anyone outside of France, Piaf is the name that most often comes to mind. And, for better or worse it could be argued that the same could be said for Madonna. Basically, we're talking fame, not necessarily style or level of talent.

La Vie en Rose

France's most memorable singer.

Madonna and Britney don't hold a candle. They rely too much on lighting/dancing/instruments.

Edith Piaf could just sing acapella and it was a masterpiece. So much emotion, strength, power, weakness. Timeless really.
