Manchester has always been at the cutting edge of developments, innovations and creative revolutions. Among our unique achievements are:
* The atom was split for the first time by Ernest Rutherford working at Manchester University in 1919
* The first public library, Chethams Library, was built in 1653, a bequest from wealthy merchant Henry Chetham. The first free public library opened on Deansgate in 1852
* The first British working canal the Bridgewater Canal was engineered in 1761
* The first inland City Seaport thanks to the Ship Canal Project in the 1890s
* The first public bus service ran from Manchester to Salford in 1824
