im soooooo in love with this movie!!!!!!!! i just recently got the dvd (2 days ago) and its all ive been seeing. i love the whole culture of the geisha and have been seeing documentaries on it

Well, as the geishas in the movie are played by three Chinese actresses, I don't think the geisha culture in that movie is really Japanese.

But as a Chinese guy, I'm very proud to find that Americans think the three Chinese actresses will sell the movie rather than any other Japanese actresses.

No. Geisha is a part of Japanese culture. So I think Geishas played by Chinese actress won't be be perfect enough to show the viewers what the REAL geisha culture is, even the movie has a pure Japanese story.

I really like the movie too, love the whole scenery and water theme, but i feel that the storyline wasnt really going anywhere. The chairman funded sanyuri secretly to be the greatest geisha ever, she became it. she fell in love with him, he also loved her, then finally got each other in the end. is that the story?

Personally, it's my view that Gong Li was robbed of an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She was really good in that movie.

Umm, I didn't notice by looks that they were anything but Japanese.

Europeans and US do inter-ethnic acting ALL THE TIME and no one makes a huge deal.

I understand there's a giant difference between inter-Asian history and inter-European history, but for god's sake it's really not noticeable.

And I have to mention, Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh are three of the most beautiful asians in the world. So they're not Japanese, cry me a river.

i soooo agree with you on that!!!!!

ok is it Zhang Ziyi or Ziyi Zhang...cause ive heard it both ways

The book leads you to a certain point and then makes sure that you know what and when it is at its greatest point. The movie not so much, although with the guy from Chicago doing the movie, the movie is great in its own right. But the book should win out in terms of story, and quality of story...|

ok just read on IMDB that her name is interchangeable..........it also says she just finished filming another Teenage Mutant Nija Turtles movie

Well, I agreed that "Europeans and US do inter-ethnic acting ALL THE TIME and no one makes a huge deal", but for some important roles like James Bond, Harry Porter, it is still better that British actors play them, however, two Bonds are not british, George Lazenby and Pirece Brosnan.

But if the actor is good enough, it's not a big deal.

Obviously, you need a Chinese to explain it for you.

When Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li got famous for that they both have won awards in Euroupean film festivals, they don't have Enlish names like Michelle Yeoh. So they always use their Chinese names like Yao Ming. In Chinese, family name comes first unlike English, Zhang, Gong, Yao and Yeoh are all Chinese family names. So sometimes, they put their family names after their given names to make English-speaking viewers understand easily. As a result, if I put their names in English orders, it will be Ziyi Zhang, Li Gong and Ming Yao. (By the way, Michelle's Chinese name is Yang Ziqiong, Yeoh is Cantonese and Yang is Mandarin.)

it's a boring movie, some geishas bitch with each other.

“Farewell, my Concubine" is really a good Chinese movie, featuring the biggest openly gay star leslie zhang, who suicide on april fool's day couple years ago.

it is a really good movie
i think many gay people can relate to the whole forbidden love thing, like me.
