When I booted up my desktop today, unstead of just going ahead and loading Windows it has come up with a blue screen that says 'Memtest86+ v1.65, and it appears to be running some sort of diagnostic test.

In spite of having had this computer for months, this is the first time I have ever seen this screen. So it has been whirring away for over an hour and a half saying things like, 'Test #6', '21%', and stuff like that.

Does anyone know what this thing is doing; whether it is important; how long is it going be doing this; can I just reboot and forget all about running it?

Doh, I fucked it up and made a duplicate post. Kindly disregard this one.

Thanks for the link, noelie. It must be something to with Ubuntu, as installing that was the last major change I made to my desktop PC. I'll leave it running for a bit longer and see what happens, but I don't like it when my computers do things that I haven't specifically told them to do.

'Memtest runs indefinately unless you stop it.'
Oops, I better stop it then. #-o

Hmmm, how very odd. I rebooted and noticed that Memtest86 is now listed in the boot order menu, along with Ubuntu and XP, I hope it hasn't set itself as the default. Still, even if it has, I think I know how to fix that by editing the GRUB thingy, at least that's what I did to get XP to boot as the default rather than Ubuntu.

No. I didn't install it I have no idea where it came from.

I've been using XP on this computer for ages, and Ubuntu as well ever since the new version came out, but today, when I booted up, it went straight ahead and ran Memtest.

It's all very odd.

Thanks I'll check it out.

Hmmm, it's not listed in Add/Remove and I can't find a file called boot.ini on drive C.

Hoody, you can edit it out of the boot list if you want.

IIRC, run sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst to edit the boot order.

It's not stored in the boot.ini grub passes off to the ntldr if windows is selected, then the boot.ini is parsed.

Thanks for the help guys.

Memtest isn't listed in the boot.ini file, so I'm guessing that it must be in the Ubuntu GRUB file. I'll have to check that later on when I can switch over to Ubuntu.
