Men Are More Comfortable Going to a Gay Bar Than Telling Family 'I Love You'

"That's according to a fall report from YouGov, which found that approximately 44 percent of adult men in the United Kingdom would be uncomfortable going to a gay bar, slightly less than the 45 percent who said they are uncomfortable telling other men they love them — even their own relatives. The report didn't break down the data based on sexuality or gender identity.

An even higher amount — 48 percent — said they are uncomfortable crying in front of other men, friends, or family."

That may be cultural/societal in the UK.

I'm not so sure I buy those figures. I'd guess that many more than 44% of men would be uncomfortable going into gay bars. I would be more inclined to believe that 44% of gay men were uncomfortable going to gay bars. I'd also expect more than 42% of men to be uncomfortable (and I note the repeated use of "uncomfortable" rather than say "unwilling") with the prospect of sharing a bed with another man.

I'm way more comfortable telling my family I love them. Gay bars are really cringe, there's always the perv who invites himself to grope you. My first time at a gay bar this guy I'm dancing with grabs my meat then proceeds to invite his friends over to do the same. :bartshock

Hooka, I apologized for that already!

I'd have to know the gay bar the questioned had in mind when they were asked. I imagine there are a lot of differences between establishments, still.

I really have no idea what gay bars are like these days. Last I visited any, [gay] patrons were still terrified of having their cars seen in the car parks/parking lots. I'm sure it's like that in smaller communities, even today.

There is some interesting information If you follow the yougov link, though.

The difference between age groups when ask about being naked in a changing room, for instance.

I don't find the connection of the two factoids to be germane.

They both need context to be meaningful.

I'm pretty darned sure a great number of men who went to gay bars had trouble uttering "I love you."

Good lord. Muhfuckers are scared to put sunscreen on another dude's back? And 9% of the youngest group are afraid to eat at a restaurant with a male friend? Dudes need to grow the fuck up.

This....

Once again, we are seeing this culture of repression and homophobia transferred to the next generations.

When people discount the harm that the casual use of 'faggot' and 'That's so gay' in the teenager locker rooms...or the continuing pressure from parents to turn out heteronormative boys...it is not surprising that there is this level of fear out there.

I would also guess that still too many guys end up getting a bj from another kid in high school...or jerking off together and then panic because it felt good and now they might be queer.

Will this start a new trend of family parties at Gay bars? :)

Any study that focuses on gay bars in this day and age is off base for addressing modern gays. It is a diminishing phenomenon as gays become mainstreamed.

Like you’re the expert on all things gay 😂

Have you ever even been to a gay bar?

They need to just suck a dick already.

I held a door for some guy the other day and he stopped short, let it close and then kind of angrily opened it again. Such fragile masculinity. I'd love to see the history on their phones.

No, I'm one voice on a gay forum, as you are Al.

I went to gay bars in two cities where I lived. They were almost living fossils, not exciting, not inviting, and a bit tawdry. There were few there, and the definite expectation of being handsy with others they weren't dating.

There were also some hybrid party clubs that were appealing to young folks on drugs and a mixed crowd, not gay bars, but they were also on shaky ground.

I think the era of gay bars being such a big thing is well past, and I hear it from lots of salty old dawgs who whored it up plenty back when hookups at bars was the norm. It's just a bygone trope that gays are somehow inherently barhoppers, only finding other gays by going to a night club and drinking and celebrating group grope or such.

Gay men find other gays in lots of places now, and mostly online, like straights do. We don't have to patronize drinking establishments to find society.

So..?
