You should try contacting you local public health department. Look in the phone book. There are programs for health assitance programs available, some of which may not cost you anything if you qualify. It may take some work but its worth a try. I have had a mood disorder for over 20 years. The treatment I recieve has helped me a great deal to improve the quality of my life. I hope things work out OK for you!

According to your profile you live in the US. Try looking in the phone book for mental health clinics/services (somethimes in a separate section for government services). Most areas have them. They charge on a sliding scale based on what you can afford. Good luck

Does the place you're taking classes from offer student insurance? Check with the main school (the extension center where you're taking classes can connect you).

Also, that school may very well have a counseling department, or psychology department that uses students as clients for therapist training. If so, participating in that is free. If you need an Rx (say, for example, bi-polar disorder or something), frequently they have staff-referral connections such that your only expense is the Rx itself.

Check around--you probably have some options. Otherwise, a quick chat with a Dr. at a community center could lead to some diagnoses and treatments fairly quickly, probably, given your symptoms.

Good luck!

Given that your annual income is $2000, you may qualify for your state "Medicaid" benefits. Medicaid are state medical insurance programs for low income citizens.

There is a lot of free health care available, it can just be difficult to find. Here in Birmingham, every resident of the county is eligible for care at the local county hospital as well as access to medications. What you pay is based on income. I believe that most large cities have programs like this.

The health department isn't a bad place to start. You might also want to contact a social worker at the nearest public hospital (and even private ones as well). There are usually a large number of smaller clinics out there as well.

Typically, it is much easier to get free access to medical care than it is to get free or low cost access to medications (at least based on what I see at the clinic I volunteer at in Birmingham). However, the big pharm companies do have a lot of ways that they cut down the cost of medication to those who can't afford it.

However, none of this is that well advertised, and that makes it somewhat hard to find. Starting at the local health department is a great first step.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to work to get yourself situated, its just the way the system in America is. There is a lot of help out there, but you have to go get it (and hence, find it, which can be difficult). Its often not terribly well advertised, but it is certainly there. But to give you an example, I know of 5 or so places that you could receive free/low cost mental health care in Birmingham. THat doesn't include the large number of psychologists and psychiatrists who have a sliding scale of fees.

Call the crisis line in your area, they are there to help 24hrs. They can also help point you in the right direction for more assistance.
To find one in your area, just go to a search page, type your location and "crisis line"

What is making you nervous? Your first visit will most likely be completing a questionaire. This will be a good move. Please let us know how it turns out.

Sudden mood changes can be caused by other physical problems rather than just mental.
How long has this been going on? What are you doing just before you experience a mood shift? Some food allergies can have mental symptoms. What have you eaten just before this happens? Do you crave any specific food? Does eating it make you feel better? One theory is you become addicted to the foods you're allergic to and mood changes can be attributed to withdrawal or hangover from the food. If that happens to be something like wheat or soy which is in everything it can be difficult to locate. How do you sleep at night? How is your weight? Do you feel cold all the time? Do you feel worse in the morning and progressively better during the day? Do you crave salt? Does salt make you feel better? Some of those could indicate thyroid or adrenal problems that can seriously affect mood. Do you take any other medications for anything? Any other unusual physical symptoms?

I'm just suggesting before jumping on an anti-depressant or medication for mental illness a thorough physical exam should be done. I also would suggest a lot of 'googling' yourself.

Im glad that you are seeking help mate , i am 18 from australia and i have a mental illness. After i told my mother my problem we went straight to my GP nad i got diagnosed with Obbsessive Compulsive Disorder. From then on i was sent to the community health clinic in my town where i was given free weekly counciling from people specialising in mental illness , the only cost i have had was seeing my GP , and paying for the medication. My advice talk to your gp , or call a mental illness clinic the number should be in the phone book , im not sure how the medical system is run in America but help should be provided to you from the health system. And for what it is worth i also live in a small rural community so dont give up hope , even trying ringing a helpline or a teen help line and im sure they would have some recourses to tell you so you can go further. Feel free to Instant message me mate if you have any questions, or you need someone to talk to.

I think you've already done one step towards your recovery....by opening your problem here at the JUB Forum helps you alleviate your anxiety. With a number of suggestions coming from the members here, i do hope you could really find something better to help you with your problem.

In my case, I may not know a lot how the healthcare system is being run in the US, i just hope you'll be able to find one and that I'll pray for you to have a peace of mind...have you tried visiting your guidance counsellor in school? if you have some closes friends that you really trust, why not open up with them/him/her...i'm sure they'll be more than willing to lend you a hand.
