Microsoft unveils Internet Explorer 8

Well it's great that it is trying to make things easier for developers... BUT

If it's not aimed towards consumers, then the designers are going to be designing for a browser that no consumers will be using.

Let's hope they bring FTP back in IE8 at least. And let's hope Microsoft doesn't do what they do with every upgrade (take away the things I like best about the last version).

I run windows 2000 at home so I cant even use IE7

Firefox is my main browser anyway. Well for Jub and porn hehe!

I hope they force people to get rid of version 6.

well, I installed... and not working for hotmail.com
now 'emulate ie7'...

Amen to that. IE6 is a pile of horrible when it comes to CSS. I hear IE7 is going to become a mandatory upgrade soon though - fingers crossed.

As for IE8, it seems to break pretty much every site I go to, so that'll be unfun for web developers. ;o

I'm just interested......why do you care?
Because that's the opinion of everybody that is professionally working with websites and serious about it. IE6 makes web developers want to smash babies against a wall.

You can easily design and code a proper website that works and looks perfectly in all the latest browser versions, but because the IT departments of many companies still let their employees use IE6 "due to security reasons" or because one of their obsolete applications only works with that version, you need to adjust your website to work and display correctly with that browser too.

And you can be sure that your beautiful website will be a mess in that browser. It's the same like some years ago when you had to create an alternative version of your website for Netscape 4.7...

While IE7 is better than previous versions, it's still a joke compared to FF. IE7 was an obvious attempt to mimic FF, but MS neglected to mimic some important features. Especially the on page Find function, which has always been bad in IE and didn't change with IE7.

What ever happened to the very old days of MS when they were about innovation rather than about playing catch-up?

When was that? As far as I remember they ALWAYS played catch up by copying other stuff for their OSes :)
However they did some innovative stuff in research and hardware :)
