So, I’m watching “The Search for the next Elvira” on Fox Reality Channel, and I was kinda shocked to see that she has such a large gay following. I’m curious to see how many guys on this forum also enjoy Elvira.

The original "Elvira" (Cassandra Peterson) attracted quite a large gay audience mostly because she was so campy with her "Mistress of the Dark" routine. That was way back in the "disco" days when high camp was considered totally gay. I am told by some of the elder gays that she even ocassionally appeared at some of the gay bars in LA and New York...in her high camp Mistress attire. Other than that, she was basically a late night movie host for low-grade, if not totally stupid horror movies, who rose to fame on some rather obscure TV stations across the country. She was kind of an "underground" TV figure who realized a measure of popularity. You had to be into her thing to really enjoy her. It wasn't the dumb movies she hosted...it was HER. I'm told that nobody even watched the movies. They just waited for her skit in between all the commercial breaks.

I saw an interview she did as herself (Cassandra) at a gay film festival in San Francisco a few years ago.

She and her interviewer (who was dressed as Elvira) discussed at length her popularity among gay men.

As Orlanodude mentioned it's all about the high camp thing. Think Marilyn Monroe.

I so missed my decade, I would of loved to been around during the Disco era. I don't know a lot about Elvira, however I do like who she makes fun of herself on this show.

I love that show! The first episode when they had the casting calls was hilarious. I was afraid of the Asian lady! And they even had a guy make it through to the next round. And Elvira's two sidekicks are men dressed as her, or "man-vira's".

I was in LA for the weekend and Elvira was going to make a personal appearance and sign autographs at one of those weird Hallowe'en shops in Universal's City Walk. But I don't know, what with the fires and all. If I was going to be there, I would show up for her appearance. Love to get her autograph!

In 1990, I saw Elvira at Knott's Scary Farm (a Halloween overlay on the park.) She had a revue that lasted about 30 minutes.

I was sitting on the right side of the audience. She made her appearance from the right, reclining on a divan. Because the piece rotated slowly, the whole audience couldn't see her at first. I screamed out, "Whooo! I love you!" and she winked and pointed at me. I was walking on air for the rest of the night.

In interviews, she seems so down to earth. You can also check her out in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. She's a biker chick. They started out together in the Groundlings. Her shtick is hysterical. Used to watch her late at night, when I lived in Chicago.

I was at fright fest in six flags great adventure not too long ago, and i was so surprised when i saw they had an elvira themed ride. I had no idea she was still around. I even had a conversation with someone saying that she looked the same when she was a kid. It was a fun ride, wish i had the fox reality channel, i wouldnt mind watching her reality show.
