Modern acoustic/folk music

Nice thread!
Whenever I hear acoustic/folk, I think of modern day singer/songwriters. My faves are Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Jack Johnson... and Jay Brannan!! I'm currently loving his music, hope he'll put out an album asap!... They are really pop musicians with an acoustic/folk edge imo. I don't mind trying some less poppy acoustic musicians tho :)

Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan, CocoRosie, Vetiver

How could I forget Ray Lamontagne especially his "Trouble" CD, and I'm currently in awe of The Decembrists' last release "The Crane Wife".

Hmm, haven't heard most of them above, but for Jack Johnson... who is great! So chilled out!

I thoroughly recommend Xavier Rudd to anyone who didn't click the link in my first post, I just adore what he's doing with the music...

patty griffin, new album children running through is stunning beautiful

For folk or acoustic music I have quite a few favorites, some mentioned above:

Jack Johnson (and he's really handsome)
Jay Brannan (I never heard of him before watching Shortbus, which was absolutely amazing. I love "26-hour day" which is on his website.)
Nickel Creek (No not Nickelback, ew!)
Rilo Kiley (If I could have anyone sing me to sleep at night it would be Jenny Lewis)
Rufus Wainwright (His music means sooooo much to me. Part of his song "Gay Messiah" is in my quote)
Martha Wainwright (Rufus' sister is equally as talented and thought provoking)
James Blunt ("Goodbye My Lover" stands out so much to me, he also does a great cover of The Pixies "Where is My Mind")
Bayside's "Acoustic" isn't folk by any means but is a powerful acoustic album that has me listening to it every other day.
Ben Harper has a grasping sound that haunts me sometimes. He did a live performance with Bonnie Raitt of "Well, Well, Well" that is eerily beautiful in every sense.
The Black Keys can be equally as haunting in their sound as Ben Harper but in a much different way. Although I see them as Blues they definitely have a lot of Folk music in them as well.
Dave Matthews acoustic performances are incredibly memorable. (He did "Gravedigger" on Farm Aid 2006 that I almost blew my stereo speakers out listening too.)
Gillian Welch is awesome (You may recognize the work she did with Alison Krauss on the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. My favorite song by her is "Caleb Meyer").
Holly Brook has a very soulful sounding voice but her lyrics are very folky to me. She reminds me a lot of Jewel, who is an amazing Poet and musician.)
John Mayer is an amazing guitarist but I think he's more pop than anything, but he's definitely worth mentioning for his acoustic work.
My Morning Jacket has an enormous set of great songs. You can find tons of live performances online from them as well. I learned about them from the documentary "Live at Bonaroo 2004".
Dan Tyminski's version of "I am a Man of Constant Sorrow" (From the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" Soundtrack) is an amazing cover. The rest of his music is pretty country but has a ton of folk influence.

There's tons more that I can't think of right now.

I can't even come to imagine how emotional that album must be... I admire that band's courage to just go acoustic for a while and continue the tour...

The song "Winter" nearly has me in tears every time I hear it.

When Winter falls next year, I'll be holding on
To anything nailed down
As for being patient with fate and all,
it's getting old. And my mind is slowly changing
I'm calling all my oldest friends,
saying "sorry for this mess we're in,"
and I'm waiting, waiting...
For the Sun to come and melt this snow,
wash away the pain, and give me back control, control.

An angel got his wings,
and we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime.

Should we still set his plate?
Should we still save his chair?
Should we still buy him gifts?
And if we don't, did we not care?
It makes you think about the life you've led,
the shit you've done, the things you've said.
And it's grounding, grounding.

I've been feeling three feet tall this month,
hardly indestructible.
But the snow melts, and the rhythm still goes on.

An angel got his wings,
and we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime.

Friends stay side by side,
in life and death you've always stole my heart,
you'll always mean so much to me, it's hard to believe this

These nights in vans,
these nights in bars,
don't mean a thing with empty hearts, with empty hearts.

An angel got his wings,
and we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime.

Friends stay side by side,
in life and death you've always stole my heart,
you've always meant so much to me, it's hard to believe
So much to me, it's hard to believe
So much to me, it's hard to believe this.

I'm surprised that with Jack, John, and Jason, no one mentioned Howie Day. One of my persoal faves.
