Are Drake's DAYS Numbered?
Posted Sunday, September 09, 2007 6:36:06 PM

Rumors hint that Drake Hogestyn has been fired from Days of our Lives. The actor, who has been with the show for 21 years, has been unhappy with his lack of storyline in recent months. A show rep denies that the actor has been let go.

With the behind-the-scenes changes at Days of our Lives and recent chatter that the show will be axed in 2009, it is no wonder that some nervous fans are beginning to speculate about the fates of some of the show's stars. The star garnering the most attention from the rumor mill of late is Drake Hogestyn (John Black).

Over the past year or so, Hogestyn has been vocal about his displeasure with his lack of storyline. For soap viewers unfamiliar with Days of our Lives, Hogestyn's character spent much of his on-screen time in a hospital bed in a coma. In May, his character regained consciousness, but he has seen little in the way of airtime since. The actor's displeasure with the way things were going slipped out at a recent fan event, where the actor seemed to imply that his exit from the show was imminent.

"At some point, everybody is going to leave the show," Hogestyn said at a fan event in June. "I have six months left on my contract, so… After 20 years of throwing fan club gatherings, this is the final mission. The reality of it is, sooner or later, you're at the tail [end] of your talent cycle, whether it be here or somewhere else."

With Hogestyn's dissatisfaction so well known, an internet rumor has incoming co-executive producer Ed Scott warning the cast and crew, "If you out, you're out." While no one will confirm that Scott even uttered those words, if true it would seemingly be an advisory to the show's cast to keep their opinions to themselves.

This has not been an easy year for Hogestyn off-screen either. As 2006 drew to a close, a fan trespassed onto Hogestyn's property and terrorized the actor's family. The fan apparently believed that Hogestyn was possessed by the devil and wanted to perform an exorcism on him.

A spokesperson, meanwhile, for Days of our Lives insists that Hogestyn has not been fired even as the covers of two soap magazines question the actor's future with the show.

"Drake Hogestyn has not been let go," a show spokesperson tells soapcentral.com.

Despite the rep's assurance, Internet conspiracy theorists are already discounting the statement as network-ordered publicity.

Hogestyn joined the cast of Days of our Lives in January 1986

Hey - do you know the status of Guiding Light? Rumors have circulated for a while that it was due for cancellation.

Wrestle, no.
However, there are rumors ATWT is being cancelled...I doubt it's true. Then I read AMC and OLTL will be made one show once Good Morning AMerica expands to 3 hours next year...GL has not be doing as badly as DOOL....Once NBC announce3s the demise of their soaps, DOOL was doomed.....I don't think GL is in an immeidate danger for cancellation.

That makes me sad. I hope that once things get too hairy, Soapnet will be able to afford taking cancelled soap operas under their wings. I love them so much! I follow the CBS ones, but the only one I really care about is Y&R.

Days has gotten to be kind of weird anyway.

Days has ALWAYS been weird, but i do have to tune into scenes with Jett and Jeremy as those boys are just insanely beautiful.

If Good Morning America expands to 3 hours, what becomes of Live with Regis & Kelly, Rachael Ray, and The View?

Both Rachael Ray and Live with Regis & Kelly are syndicated shows. If GMA is expanded, one of those would most likely go. I'm no expert, but I believe that local affiliates probably have to carry their network shows.

I think Guiding Light and As the World Turns are safe for a while. CBS seems to back their soaps.

Days of our Lives is in big trouble. Since Passions left NBC, Days of our lives has slipped behind all network soaps in the ratings for the first time in its 41 year history. NBC has said it will probably cancel the show in 2009.

But, if Passions can get picked up on another network, I think Days will be able to also. I personally think Days should get a new head writter ASAP. The show has lost about 25% of its audience since the current head writer has came on the show.

I don't think Drake should be fired. He isn't the best actor, but he has loyal fans following him. He has been involved with some of my favorite all time storys with the show. The possession and the Marlena/John/Kristen triangle.

Days is so strange, but I sortof enjoy seeing that in a soap. If it becomes too 'level based,' it'll lose the originality that it brings to the genre. We got normal soaps already, I say DOOL should stick to what it's best at- fucked up sl's. I say that with trully respective reguards, btw. It's definatly not my favorite, but it's still alright.
