OK, Hairspray was bad enough, but now there are plans for a remake of Footloose with Zac Efron. Zanadu has come back to Broadway, Legally Blond has started, with Grease to start soon. Plans are also in the works for 9 to 5, written by Dolly Parton.

What's going on? Maybe we should have a musical version of Harry Potter that they could then make into a movie.

not to mention Young Frankenstein.

sometimes the transition works....sometimes, not so much.

and for what it's worth -- I didn't find Hairspray (original movie, Broadway musical, or the newest movie of that musical) bad at all.

I think London will wait to see how well Toronto's disastrous musical version of Lord of the Rings does.

Hairspray is fantastic. Can't wait to see the stage show now. There's currently a stage version of Dirty Dancing in London and back in the late 90s there was a musical of Whistle Down The Wind. Desperately Seeking Susan opens in London in November. Broadway recently had The Wedding Singer (which had the worst score I've ever heard so I'm glad I didn't see it) and High Fidelity. The Color Purple is still doing well on Broadway.

Desperately Seeking Susan should be left alone...the original movie is a classic! If anything, there should be a special edition DVD. Please no musical!

Footloose...come on! The original was all right, but a remake? Sheesh!

Have you seen the original lately? It was horrible! I think Dirty Dancing copied from it. Wait that's it! Dirty Dancing on Broadway!

(Not to say Dirty Dancing was horrible,) but it needs to stay where it is.

I'm sure Dirty Dancing will transfer to Broadway at some point.

You're too late! As I said it's opening in London in November. it's a jukebox musical like Mamma Mia only using the hits of Blondie.

hey anything on king street is disastrous
now that ed's dead it might change

Pygmalian, the play. Pygmalian, the movie. My Fair Lady, the play. My Fair Lady, the movie. What's so different about Hairspray? Broadway has adapted dozens of plays and movies for the stage and has musicalized dozens of plays and movies. It's been a standard practice for most of the twentieth century.

Not many may have heard of it, but the 1954 film Carmen Jones (an all black musical version of the bizet opera) is currently in the works. could be awesome

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 90% of musicals are based on other sources. In the past, it has mainly been books and plays. As time progresses, it just seems natural that movies would be used as source material. Movies are the same way... maybe not as high of a percentage, but few movies are just completely made up stories out of someones head. Maybe one of the problems is that they are choosing to base these shows on very popular, mainsteam movies.

On the up-side, the stage version of Hairspray is amazing; I haven't seen Xanadu yet, but from what I hear they just took the basic premise and completely wrote their own book and it got amazing reviews; and from what I hear, Legally Blonde is really good, too. And, don't forget...Grease was a stage musical before it was a movie.

Carmen Jones is (in)famous for having one of the all-time great production gaffes in the opening sequence. As Miss Dorothy Dandridge is winding her way down the street, check out the windows in the storefronts...there's the entire camera crew reflected in every one!
