Is it really the end of the line for law enforcement in TV and movies?

Some truly amazing scenes come from movies about police.

I don't really like police or crime dramas much but I do like Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T and Christopher Meloni and they got a pickup already through 2023 making it the longest running primetime scripted drama in US TV history this year surpassing Gunsmoke and it will be ahead of the rest by four years in 2023.

Other than that I love Police Academy on film and Brooklyn 99 on TV. Humor works better with Cops for me

It is time for the US to wean itself away from police shows that often rely on tropes of physical violence by police bordering on thuggery.

The British do these so much better.

Perhaps we will now start to see police shows that are less about hardware and militarized community forces and more about collaborative community policing that focuses on the importance of de-escalation and the use of brains over brute strength.

There's a part of me that is ashamed by all the police/law enforcement themed TV shows and movies I've enjoyed over the years.

Film and television only show the police we dream for and hope for - never the awful that is possible when the wrong people get that badge and a weapon.

So warped by all the cop shows I've seen that I had a real problem sitting through "Serpico", the 1973 movie with Al Pacino.
A cop who doesn't support the brotherhood is a dead cop - decades later and we still don't listen.

Absolutely, but there should be more. Only now the tide is turning away from all depictions of law enforcement.
How will Hollywood stand up to people screaming for a "cop-free-media"?

Oh man, I had SUCH a crush on him in the Seventies! If I'm asked to list the Ten Most Gorgeous men ever (which has to be people with at least moderate familiarity among "the masses" - not some gorgeous hunk from PrOn or a bodybuilding site, etc.), Erik Estrada is ALWAYS on the list. I loved that movie! Not in my Top Ten, but it IS way up there, and certainly in my Top Ten if I was making a list of drama movies.

Agree - it is the only cop drama I think I have ever watched - maybe that is why. I do like the comedy ones though.

I forgot - I did watch The Wire too and I liked it.

I loved that movie! Not in my Top Ten, but it IS way up there, and certainly in my Top Ten if I was making a list of drama movies.

Both Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox were as popular among men and women - I never missed an episode of "CHiPs"

Look what the police have to work with and how much money the good people of ..... have to pay for them. Love the chair scene with Serpico. The next time some teenager feels 'inspired' by Scarface, I might recommend Serpico instead.

Good cops that have testified against crooked cops have gone into the witness protection program.
