I could give you an endless list of the most shocking movies ever, but here is an abbreviated list of the standouts -- movies that, for one reason or another, shocked audiences, stirred up controversy, and achieved legendary notoriety in the pantheon of American cinema:

The Exorcist
Psycho
Jaws
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original)
Last House on the Left
Pink Flamingos
Last Tango in Paris
Midnight Cowboy
Blue Velvet
Basic Instinct
Fatal Attraction
Deliverance
Straw Dogs
Salo: 100 Days of Sodom
The Crying Game
The Passion of the Christ
Se7en
Freaks

I hope that "Million Dollar Baby" will help the fight to legalize euthanasia in the States.
it is a shame that in the country where you are allowed to carry a gun and threaten or kill your neigbour, you are not allowed to choose the time of your death when there is no other choice.

The religious grip on US policies is still very strong !

I doubt it shocked the world, but 'Clockwork Orange' was shocking, to me.

how about Shortbus. The sex scenes (including gay ones) are all real and not simulated like in other movies.
I'd say that's pretty shocking for many people in our society.

Didn't shock me, but worth seeing.

I know your looking for recent movies but I have to mention the movie that did the most shocking would be "The Birth of A Nation". If you want to talk about shocking the world AND changing not only the world but changed the way films are made....THAT is the movie.

There was a celebrated French movie made a few years ago .... can't for the life of me remember the name ..... about a dowdy, withdrawn female piano teacher who was into all kinds of bizarre sexual practices in private, including cutting herself for sexual gratification. It was pretty shocking. Anyone remember the name?

Basic Instint by far. I was in college and my gay group wanted to wear buttons that said "Catherine did it" and pick-it the movie. Movies changed after that movie. You got a shit load of crazy females on screen. Now watching the movie it's not so good at all but at the time it was the shit. There was truely nothing like it.

men behind the sun
the untold story
evil dead trap

I think "The China Syndrome" was kind of shocking....

And Cher was kind of shocking playing a dyke in "Silkwood"....
