My brother reset the computer so we could get our memory back. But now...

there are a couple of problems, which when we reset before, we never had.

Going to certain websites through the address bar is impossible. It always says Access Denied.

I also can't download Mozilla Fire Fox to see if it's Internet Explorer because it won't let me.

All of these strange things are happening and they didn't start until AFTER he reset the computer. And usually, after we reset, freeing up space, the computer runs faster, but it's not.

The only good thing I can say is that we got a new printer yesterday and that is working fine.

I dunno what to do!

:help: ](*,) :-({|= :(

Sounds like it could be a bug you picked up and it hijacked your browser

This is one crappy bug!!

Anyway, I think the info you're looking for is

Windows XP, Dell.

I would run a virus / spyware scan just to be safe.

Also, are there user accounts on the computer or just a main one everyone uses?

Perhaps access permissions were changed if thats the case, although seeing as your 22, I don't think there would be a need to censor what you see or do on a computer, lol.

In any case, take a peek over here if your browser will let you, and grab the files / programs you'll need if you don't already have them installed.
http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20

Recommended (free) programs : AVG Anti Virus, Ad-Aware / Spybot S&D, and if you don't have a firewall, the zone-alarm personal (free edition) works wonders!

I use all the above and haven't had a virus in 4+ years easily. Thats even with lots of downloads and torrents which include cracks (with viruses usually tossed in as a cost for the DL, lol) and such, so if my computer stays healthy, so can yours.

Most importantly: Don't install random crap / files or programs which you don't know who/what they are. (Obviously =P ) Don't run .exe directly, especially from emails.

I'm sure you already know alot of this, but might be helpful for anyone else who may use your computer! ^.~

Best of Luck, and keep us posted!

More - more.

What exactly did your brother do? Exactly!

OK. I will ask when he gets up....which will be much later.

For now, I don't know what he did; I didn't watch him do it.

I will probably check out those links after I get up.

Ok, as per Noelie said, we need a lot more information.

What the heck to you mean by "reset the computer" and "get our memory back"??? As in, that's uber-vague. Did he simply turn it off and on? Did he hit the "reset" button? Did he format the computer and reinstall windows? Did he do some other horrible thing? ;) OH, AND PLEASE, PLEASE don't tell me he used System Restore to go back to when you first got the computer.....

Don't worry about viruses and spyware now, i don't think that's the problem, at all. It sounds like something seriously got messed up by this "resetting". The 'access denied' messages, and inability to access certain websites could be caused by any number of really bad problems (or simple ones). The missing key is what your brother DID to this computer.

We also need to know the computer's
Make: Dell
Model #: ???
O/S: Windows XP
Any changes you've made to it in the past: ???

I can't really explain it more than I already have - I believe he reformatted. You know, when you want to get ALL the memory back that you're using: Songs taking up space, unnecessary programs that you want to get rid of, pretty much just "clean" it out. You know? If you don't understand me still, I don't know what to tell you.

But I will look and give you the model number...I don't understand its importance though. If you told me, that'd be dandy! =D

The Product Number is RPHYJ - QJ4JD - 2QPG9 - XR2GQ
But there's a number under it, which might be what you're looking for:
000043-462-713-941

I hope I answered all questions needed. But when my bro gets up, in like an hour or so, I will definitely ask him what exactly he did.

Thanks for the help so far. I really, really appreciate you guys helping!

: )

P.S. We never did anything too major to the computer. Just what we did recently - more than a restart, but reformatting or whatever, mainly so the computer went faster. And it did, almost every time we got rid of stuff. But this time, that didn't happen, and problems came along with it too! :'(

And I doubt that my brother did a system restore. But only he knows if he did or not. Again, I will ask in a few hours...

And btw, this is the only site that works properly.

Yahoo Answers won't let me log in or post answers to question...and I <3 <3 <3 that site!
But I guess for now, being here is keeping me sane! :D

And there are two active accounts:

Agie (Me)
Ariel (My brother)

Could that B a prob??

And although it couldn't fix the problem (it needs a restart), SpyBot found these problems:

Fun Web Product(s)
Max Files
Smitfraud-C
Win32Agent.qt
Zlob.VideoActiveXAccess

And on a whole, we don't really look at porn, so that's a good thing.

But with what I've posted thus far, lemme know what you think!

It sounds like you picked up some crap before you had the system up to date and fully up and running. It also sounds like you did a system restore - that could put your PC back quite a bit and you would need to go straight to the Microsoft website and get all your updates asap.

When getting MS updates you need to go back to the MS website several times and reboot when it tells you to cos some updates are only available after you've applied other updates.

Personally - I'd do another system restore (since you've just done one you've nothing to lose. Then I'd get all my updates - don't go near any other website until the MS update site says there's nothing left to be updated.

Then I'd install AVG Free or Avast Free antivirus and then Spybot and Spyware Blaster immediately after that and finally I'd install Firefox and any plugins like Macromedia Flash etc. - once you've got all that done (and it should only take a couple of hours) you'd be good to go.

As a final step I'd check for all the latest drivers from the hardware manufacturers (and then I'd make a ghost image but that's another bridge to be burnt).

See what the other guys say though.

OK, OK. I will try what you said, but I said that we can't get FireFox at the moment. It won't let us.

OK. Here it is. My brother is now going to type what he did to the computer yesterday:

system restore to june 31st
deleted most files and aps
kept avg,itunes,moz.,

OK yea, i get a gold star for guessing he did a system restore don't i? ;)

OK.

A. You're fucked and now you have to format the computer and reinstall windows.
B. System restore removes NOTHING from your computer as far as files are concerned, so if you thought it was freeing up hard drive space, you was wrong ;). System restore is used to revert settings back to a working order. If you use it when nothings wrong, you make bad choice ;).
C. What this has done, as noels said, is revert your registry to a previous state, and you've done this without preparing it properly, which has effectively labodomized your computer :(.
D. I don't know the particular cause of your web browsing problems, but i'm pretty sure it's all caused by the SysRest.

So, whatcha need to do is gather all the CDs that came with your computer, and make sure one is the Operating System install disc. You're going to want to back up your critical data (schoolwork, porn, movies, personal info, etc...) to CDs, and then format the whole shebang. Then reinstall windows with the CD that came with your computer. Then you're going to need to update all of your drivers to the most current versions (we'll get to that after the reinstall), and then restore your backed up files.

And for deity's sake, don't let your brother or anyone else use system restore again. EVER. And always ask your friends here at JUBTS when you think there's a problem!

Why can't they just undo the last system restore? isn't that usually an option with the system restore thing?

my system restore doesn't work so i can't even check that, i always get the "..has performed an illegal function and will be shut down..." crap. But anywho...i thought you had the option to undo the last restore point? if they did this like today or yesterday can't they try that?

sorry that's probably too simplistic an answer to work, but thought i'd throw it out there. ;)

IMHO - all winxp users should "Turn off system restore"

start>setting>control panel>system>system restore>check "Turn off system restore">apply

Hey, guys. I'm back.

Anyway, everything seems to be working again:

I can go to the websites that are my favorites with no problems. And I have mozilla. And yahoo messenger works, so that's pretty much all I need.

Thank you for your help, and if I need to take some of this advice later, I will surely come back.

Thanks for being so understanding and nice guys, the usual.

=D

I know this is a bit off topic, but why would you turn off System Restore ???
