Berate me all you want for waiting this long, but just keep it out of this topic please... thanks!

I've put it off for far too long, but I do believe I want to get tested for general STDs. I have no symptoms that I'm aware of - it's just to put my mind at ease. Now, this'll be my first and despite the information that the Municipal Health Service (GGD) has online, I'm a bit worried about it. Basically, I don't know what to expect. I know I'll have blood drawn and I need to present a urine sample, but the rest of the test's unclear to me.

What can I expect from an STD test?
(if a fellow Dutchman reads this: I'd love an answer from you)

I'm not sure if you would consider me a 'fellow Dutchman' being from the Antilles etc...but It all depends what type of tests you want or ask to have done.
In the event you are going to have HIV tested they should (and I know the Netherlands is good with this) give you pre- and post counseling. If they do not offer this you should ask, it is very important.
It is much better to know than not.

Love life, take control, get tested.

Agree ^ Counseling is part of HIV testing in most places. This is an opportunity to clarify questions.

I'm not familiar with the Dutch Health System or local STD guidelines but I assume this article below clarifies some questions about expectations.

What I got from the website I visited is that an HIV test is not need, but I'll ask about it once I'm there as well.

We get a 'If I call you it'll be bad news otherwise you're clear' from our doctors most of the time and that's it.

That's harsh...

Is your GP very familiar with HIV/AIDS or he just does the testing and sends you on to a specialist?
I that case I would opt to see the specialist from the get go....

I do have to check how much this'll cost me. I'm not exactly loaded and if this is more than a few tenners, it's no good. The health website doesn't have any info on it, so I'll have to give 'em a call tomorrow.

Well, shit.

I was all ready to make an appointment and life got in the way. I had the phone in my hands and then my dad called. He's in the hospital (short story: probably a blood clot in the heart, needs an angioplasty, he'll be fine). And since appointments can only be made between 10:30 and 13:00 and since I have tomorrow, I won't be able to make an appointment till Friday. And guess what day I was aiming for to have the actual tests?

Ah well, I don't think a day or three matter anyway. :)

Hope your Dad is ok--If you have no symptoms then the testing is for peace of mind, so three days will not hurt you.

^ My dad'll be fine, otherwise I wouldn't have been so matter-of-factly about it. :)

Thank you for your concern

Follow-up post.

My peace of mind was affirmed this morning. Chlamydia, HIV, hep B, syphilis, herpes, gonorrhoea, all negative. Second Hep B vaccination due in a few weeks.

Now that your clear for play, I'll be over in a few hours ..|
