My sweet cat, whom I have had since she was a baby 15 happy years ago, has been diagnosed with feline CRF (Chronic Renal Failure) and is in the hospital on intravenous fluids. Although the vet says things are looking good and she just may live many more months or years, and I will bring her home this Thursday, I know this is the beginning of the end for her and I am distraught and depressed. Pets give you so much joy, but it is very heartbreaking when these unavoidable times come. She is the sweetest and gentlest of creatures and I hope she will live the rest of her natural life as pain-free as possible; she has given me so much love and companionship and been there for me through the lowest point in my life, even writing these words is difficult...

I know, and even though I am already upset over the fact that she will die some day, I have at the same time imagined the joy rescuing a kitten from the incinerator, as I did with her, will bring. You are very sweet and kind to offer your comforting thoughts; your significant other is very lucky to have you, and I hope you are very happy!

Oh no, so sorry to hear this! To some extend I can imagine how you feel since I have also had a cat for almost 15 years and even the thought of loosing him is very saddening... (*8*)

I hope she will be fine and have a full and painfree life...

i am so sorry to hear about your cat, i know how hard it is when they are sick. and if it come time you had to put her to sleep just remember she will be alot better off. i had to fight with my self about 3 months ago to have my cat put to sleep. and it was the hardest thing i every had to do.

My heart bleeds for you my friend....
As a lover of animals, and also having numerous pets of my own throughout my life - I know exactly how you feel.
Make each day now, as special as you can for BOTH of you.
You say she has been there for you through your lowest points in your life, and given you so much love and companionship - it is time for you to do the same now for her. (Not that you haven't before - but it is time for her now...).
Write this down and keep it.....www.petloss.com
This is a beautiful place, with lots of wonderful people who have helped me a lot. It is a good place now to visit.......and definately a great place later to turn to.
Anyone who loves an animal as much as you - is a beautiful person. Hug your baby for me too......(*8*) (*8*)

Hee jetsonboy, sorry to hear your cat is sick. I have to cats of myself or they have me...and I would die if something would happen to either one of them. I totally understand how you must feel. But for now your cat is still here! Enjoy her or him and let your cat enjoy you, there is still time.

First off, I want to reassure you that CRF is not a death sentence. Your cat can live for years to come with this disease. In fact, if your kitty holds on long enough, it may ultimately be other age-related ailments she eventually succumbs to.

I have a 15-year-old CRF cat who was diagnosed two years ago. At that time, the vet gave him a prognosis of about 2 years. Today, he seems healthier than he has ever been -- he eats voraciously, hasn't lost any weight, seems happy and energetic, and even seems to be vomiting less (he has always had a sensitive tummy and been prone to vomiting, but less so since I have been diligent about keeping him on a protein-restricted diet and occasionally giving him 1/4 tab of a 10mg tablet of Pepcid AC to reduce stomach acid). I have not yet had to start him on daily sub-Q fluids, and there's no indication that I will need to any time soon. He's only been in the hospital once for a day of fluid therapy in the two years since his diagnosis.

I've heard of a cat who was diagnosed at age 13, like my cat, and lived to be 21. Other cats succumb within a few months of diagnosis. It all depends on the cat.

I strongly urge you to check out the following sites, which have invaluable information for you:

www.felinecrf.com
www.felinecrf.org

I also belong to the FelineCRF and Feline-CRF-Support groups on Yahoo Groups, which has a lot of very caring, supportive people sharing their experiences caring for CRF kitties and dispensing up-to-the-minute info.

There's lots you can do to make sure your cat has a good quality of life for a long time to come, so my best advice to you is to get very proactive about her treatment.

Feel free to shoot me a private message if you want more info.

P.S. -- A general word of advice to you and all the other pet owners on this thread...

When the time comes to let your animal companions go, I would strongly urge you to track down a vet who will come to your home to do the procedure. I have always hated the idea of taking my pets to the one place they hate most for them to spend the final moments of their lives, so I tracked down a good vet who makes house calls so that my babies can pass on in the comfort of their own home where they feel safe and secure.

The home vet has actually worked out really well since our CRF cat needs to have his renal values checked every few months, and he no longer has to experience the trauma of being forced into his carrier, taken for a ride in the car, and then spend time at the "bad place." It easily saves over an hour of my time as well because I don't have either the commute to the vet or the wait time at the vet office.

It costs a little bit more, but not that much, and no cost is too great when it comes to my "kids."

Honey...

I know there are not words, and as a 'cat person' myself I tear up just
reading this...

But just know that he is one LUCKY cat to have found such a great owner,
and you're...

Well, I can't even finish this. :(

Josh

Jet,

I am soooooo sorry to hear 'bout your Kitty!

Please, just try and make the kitty comfortable and NOT hurting if you can...

Leave it to the Vet to determine if the kitty is suffering too much and.....???

I can't even bear to say the words of what next above; but I know that you have thought of "IT" too....

Saying a kitty prayer for your kitty!!(*8*) (*8*)

A Kitty's Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
The king-size bed is soft and deep...
I sleep right in the center groove
My human can not hardly move!

I've trapped his legs, he's tucked in tight
And here is where I pass the night
No one disturbs me or dares intrude
Till morning comes and "I want food!"

I sneak up slowly to begin
my nibbles on my human's chin.
He wakes up quickly,
my claws they are prickly

For the morning's here
and it's time to play
I always seem to get my way.
Oh thank you Lord for this day.

And thank you Lord for giving me
This human person that I see.
The one who hugs me and holds me tight
And sacrifices his bed at night!

I love kittys! I'm so sad Jetsonboy and I hope the kitty does better!

Jetsonboy, DryIce has some really really good advice.

Unfortunately for me, my 15 yo cat succumbed within a couple months of being diagnosed. :( It was heartbreaking. He was the most important thing in my life, and went through good times & bad with me. Just put him down a year ago. Totalled my car the next day.

Whatever you do, don't wait too long. My wife wanted to keep him alive as long as possible, and it ended up being too long. He was very unhappy at the end. Don't make that mistake.

But like DryIce said, we had the vet come out to our house and put the cat to sleep in his favorite place--on the grass in our backyard. It was so sad to say goodbye.

I bawled like a 2 year old!

Good luck.

Awwww.............

Here's some hugs to make you feel a little better................(*8*) (*8*) (*8*) (*8*)

Thank you everyone so much for your caring and comforting words! I am going to see her this morning, and will tell her how many people have thought about her. The emotional pain I am in has me sort of paralized; I have lost my appetite and desire to do much of anything all I do is think about her; her absence in my home is very palpable. She will most likely come home this Thursday, and we will see what's next. I really appreciate your words. I know I will be fine, but all that matters now is my sweet baby!

Update: My sweetie is doing better today, moving around and showing signs of hope. I think she might be around for a longer while than I thought, and that makes me happy. When I see or learn that she is in pain or suffering though, I promise I will take the last step for her in her life journey.

jetsonboy, I've already got tears in my eyes. I understand how you feel.

I hope she's going to be OK but whatever happens don't lose sight of the fact that your cat has had 15 wonderful years with you. My own cat is the same age and I dread losing her.
I'm thinking of you.

I am naming my new kitty JETSON (if its a male!)
