I agree it is definitely not a good situation. Maybe you both should go out for dinner or coffee and talk about it. Let him know you're sorry for being naughty and you in no way wanted to take advantage of him or damage your friendship and his trust. Then explain how you perceived his actions as signals. I think a real frank talk would answer your questions and build up your friendship.
