And it seems to be true. Every year that passes by, it seems that everyone under 25 is less and less comfortable with live social interaction and increasingly only borderline articulate when one does try to have a general conversation.
But it is hopefully only a phase and people will grow out of it.

i think you are assessing the situation correctly rareboy. what stimulates the nadir of a melancholic episode is that they seem to be quasi-literate and their spelling is not just poor typing like some of us. ex: there-their here-hear isnt-isn't ad nauseum 
go online adjust your AIM to send texts to your mobile phone. When he AIM's you, it'll show up on your phone and you can hit reply to the 5 digit code that it comes in on and it'll appear on his AIM.

^ That'd solve the problem of "I don't like sending him IMs, but I love sending him text messages." But I honestly don't see much difference between the two.

Maybe. I know I am. But I'm an advisor over at EC, a site for gay teens. And I can't tell you how many threads and PMs I've had to deal with that involve people cutting and pasting entire IM or text conversations with "What does s/he MEAN?" attached. It seems people have no trouble going on to a messageboard, spilling out everything, and saying "I don't know what this means"...but they can't go to the person sending the message and say "I don't know what this means." That indicates some sort of problem, in my book.

Maybe. I know I am. But I'm an advisor over at EC, a site for gay teens. And I can't tell you how many threads and PMs I've had to deal with that involve people cutting and pasting entire IM or text conversations with "What does s/he MEAN?" attached. It seems people have no trouble going on to a messageboard, spilling out everything, and saying "I don't know what this means"...but they can't go to the person sending the message and say "I don't know what this means." That indicates some sort of problem, in my book.

Face it, CNN tweets. It sucks yes, change sucks, but you can either be a naysayer and talk about the glory days or accept it and adapt to the comfortable version of you.
I know many many people that HATED the concept of texting. Why do people text, I rather call. Today, after some time, some actually embrace it. Some use it like they never once hated it. Just sayin...

I'm not anti-technology. I'm just against using a tool for something it's not ideal for.
A band tweeting that they'll be doing a special gig tomorrow night in Cleveland, or that they'll be on Conan tonight, is someone using a tool correctly. Someone tweeting their friends to say "Not sure I still like Bryan that way anymore" isn't.
Someone texting a friend saying "Wanna hit the club 2nite around 9?" is someone using a tool correctly. Someone attempting to develop a relationship by trying to figure out if his "Thx 4 last nite TTYL" means they're now an "item" isn't.

Unfortunately, it is getting more difficult disseminate between the two schools of thought of using technology for it's "appropriate" uses and "unappropriate" uses. But in reality, I guess you could say it's also in the eye of the beholder. Not everyone has the same view.
For instance, if you think about online dating, some people would have never thought that could work and could be legitimate. But it does and has for many. To an extreme what about cyber sex? The 4 posters would gawk at that I'm sure. But how many people outnumber you in the fact that they like it. You may say they use it like they use porn. But what about couples that use it in long distance relationships?
I even know a woman who has a remote controlled vibrator. Her boyfriend, over the internet, can control it when they mess around over webcam. And she's a dentist!
If you look at how some kids meet people, they use facebook for cold introductions. Say you eye someone in class, you find out their name, look it on on facebook and say hello. That's the new way now. Some call it cyberstalking some call it a crutch. Many call it socially acceptable.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but people carry different levels of comfortability by using the technology of today. Someone could have a relationship whose communication is conducted mostly on text or AIM. It looks terrible to others, but that could be right for them. They could get married one day.
Heck, the top tweet ever was a "will you marry me" @name with an @reply, "yes". One may look at that and shake their head while another may think that's cute. To them, that's thier world and they're happy in that world.
I agree that it my be sad, or it may not be your preference, or it may be unhealthy. But there's no defined line, there are no hard rules and who am I to decide for the rest of the world what is appropriate use of technology. And technology is going to get more extreme and along with it are people going to get more extreme in using it.
Like I said, I'm all for traditional ways to do stuff too. Do what's right for you, but don't expect everyone else to do it your way, cause everyone isn't the same as you.
