A while back, I saw a movie that I cannot remember the name of. At the end of the movie, all the adventures, all the characters, all the events, etc. happened in the main character's fantasy world and that she was in fact living in a mental institution. She is always non-responsive in the real world because she is living her life out in her fantasy world.

What condition is that called?

Just a stab in the dark: catatonia.

The movie sounds like Shutter Island. Instead of a she, it was a he.
