earlier this year i was reading comments about male aggression and violence and came across the phrase 'performative masculinity' and that's my new favorite phrase, I use it like 600x a day now. Guy likes at me sideways-- "Oh, nice performative masculinity dawg."
Ok not THAT casually but it fits into so many discussions about current events and modern culture. it opened my eyes to just how much the male experience is shaped by us behaving in ways that we're taught "this is how you're supposed to be." A prime example is the myth about men being naturally inclined to sex and thinking about it all day long. Ok is that nature or is it a result of being taught that it's ok for us to indulge in sex whereas women are to be ashamed of it? Do guys really think about it that much or do we hype it up cuz we're "supposed to?" Downlow dudes come to mind, these are the guys who put on a big display reacting to every big butt that walks by like it's the first time they've ever seen a beautiful woman. There's "being a horn dog" and there's "loudly being a horn dog so everybody can see that I'm normal."
#2 on my list which I heard a few years ago was "generational vanity" (I wanna say I came across that one here actually) and it really struck a chord with me. I used to begrudgingly sit, like most of us do, and listen to the elders talk about how they used to shit gold and their farts smelled like roses and it didn't make sense to me but I played along until someone articulated the phenomenon in those two simple words.
