mmmkayyyy.

So the first day back in the office I did something I never do and put my tea mug on the left side of my mauspad...and then sploshed some of it on my HP office laptop.

WTF have I done I cried as over the next 1/2 hour my keyboard turned to muddle.

Fortunately when my screen hinge wore out from my house HP, I had purchased a replacement in November and my IT wiz transferred all the files to it. But I still now need another for home....

I am happy to recommend HP ENVY 17-CR0008CA TOUCHSCREEN LAPTOP, at about $1750 Cdn. I don't need the touchscreen necessarily, but the quality of the porn on the screen and the Bang &Olufsen sound is great.

So just in case. I am a happy customer and can share my testimonial.

Why aren't laptop keyboards under a protective plastic barrier like detached keyboards are? I remember 30 years ago the IT department used to take keyboards to the car wash to clean out crumbs and drink spills.

Were we not losing enough laptops so they designed in extra vulnerabilities?

I understand all the cool kids are now using tablets with wireless keyboards...but hard to gat a nice 17 inch tablet.

I could use a new laptop. Hell, I could use a lot of new body parts. Everything is over 50 years old.

Oh. You were talking about a computer, not a laptop on a body?

Really, when you think of it, this is the only thing that really matters in a computer.

I remember being intrigued when I saw B&O mentioned on cheap HP laptops at Target... I recognize the name from the audio world, although they are not a top audio maker. But they certainly made some interesting products with styling over the years.

I have to wonder what I'd think of the sound, though. I don't have much experience with laptops, but I have a hard time imagining the speakers being anything more than a convenience. Part of me misses the days I used Apple, because every Apple comptuer I ever had came with a built-in speaker. But it was never more than a convenience. I was surprised at how much better even the startup chord sounded when I ran the sound from my-then daily driver Mac through my audio system once. (Admittedly, though, not good enough to justify any permanent arrangemetn--the speaker in the comptuer was good enough for what I needed at that time.)

This might vary by brand. I think I've heard of some that have some protection. Maybe ThinkPads. But I can't remember for sure.

There certainly is variability with design elements that might make a difference in how long the product will last. One example: the charging port connection (at least a few years ago) was more likely to be long lived on some laptops than others.

And let's not forget a lot of people just use phones now... As I'm reminded by one conversation I had this week with someone who thinks a smart phone is the best solution ever! and obviously thinks I should go that route. Actually, there were two conversations--that one conversation, and then another conversation when I ranted about that first conversation to someone else (who is not a fan of smart phones, and wishes she still had her flip phone).

I half think sometimes a tablet would be nice just for the portability. I get a bit tired of having to sit at a desktop computer. But I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with a tablet even as a secondary device, given privacy issues.
