Well it is (past) time for me to buy a new router for home.

Has anyone bought one recently they would recommend? I need one with good range so I will get signal in the back.

Thanks for any hints!

It depends what options you want. I assume both 2.4 and 5 GHz wifi, iPv6, VoiP calls supported (although I've never used it), USB device support for file sharing...
I have a tp link VX220 and I use a netgear power line adapter to get a signal upstairs. Hope this helps.

A few other things to consider:
  • Do you have friends who come over and want to use your wireless while they are there? If yes, then get a router that offers a guest network and password separate from your home network.
  • Do you have a lot of wireless devices in your home (TV, DVR, DVD player, streaming devices) that contend for bandwidth? Are you a gamer? If so, spend a little extra and get a better router that can juggle the workload and limit the speed of those devices.
  • Pay attention to the warranty. If your router is going to go to shit, it usually happens in the first year. Make sure that if your router has a hardware issue in the first year, it will be replaced for free by the manufacturer.

As for your concerns about speed, the better home routers often offer a repeater that can be purchased separately. The repeater will connect to your main router and amplify the signal. This is handy if you have the main router in your home office or entertainment room but you also have wireless devices like cameras or sprinkler systems that are outside or distant from where you are going to locate the main router.

I ended up with TP-Link Deco XE5300 - I think it is a special packaging done for Costco.

It is a wifi 6 mesh system with the main unit and 2 repeater units to put around the house.

So far it seems great - coverage is very uniform throughout - including outside on the deck.

It wasn't cheap but seemed reasonable ($200ish) when you consider all the different items that rely on wi-fi these days.

Thanks for the suggestions!

And I'm old enough to remember when wi-fi was a rariety--limited to some laptops... How times change...

Network performance is critical today. You don't want the porn video to suddenly freeze right when it gets interesting.
