New York Mets 2009-10 Winter report

Can we ever get too much Ike Davis?I think not;)I'm working tomorrow evening but will either tape or catch the interview with Kevin Burkhard some time this weekend. He has a fantastic maturity and approach to the game and looks like the kind of player who will always strive to be great at bat and a first base.I read stuff about his outfield play which was quite positive.Good instincts, average runner but makes the plays and throws well(like sonny mentioned he did pitch some at ASU)but the indications are he will be a stellar defensive first baseman, and that is his best position. He'll fill the bill there with the Mets for a long time indeed when he arrives for good later in the year.

Last night on Mets Hot stove Kevin B sat down with Jason bay, Angel pagan and Jeff francour for a really fun talk. The boys were loose and joked around with Kevin who always gets the most out of the players
Kevin asked great questions like who had the best arm and who is the fastest. The boys looked at each other and had fun with the answers. The whole interview was just flat out great, typical Kevin Burkhardt.
Unfortunately the thing I was waiting for the most was ruined. Ike Davis was not interviewed by Kevin but Chris Carlin who I really do not like all that much. Carlin is a big mouth, annoying hack and in my opinion not all that skilled in the art of baseball. So when I saw Kevin turn the show over to him when the Davis interview came up I was very disappointed. Carlin asked all the wrong questions and unlike Kevin had no fun with Ike at all. The questions were dull and offered little insight to Ike the man. There were so many things that I know about Ike that Carlin could have talked to him about that would have made the interview interesting and fun, but that did not happen. Ike did his best and did show what a terrific personality he has and how much he loves the game. But still the interview was flat thanks to Carlin.
Kevin also spoke with Jerry Manual but nothing much new came out of that. Manual still plans on batting Reyes Third and Pagan first. I still hate the idea of Reyes out of the leadoff spot. HATE IT!
I did enjoy Bobby O and listing to his thoughts about the2010 team. It was especially great to finally hear someone say what I have been saying for months and that is how important the catcher is to the pitchers and how much more a good catcher can get out of a pitcher and improve his game.

Well kiddies just 4 days till the first spring training game on Tuesday. It will be Mets/Atlanta and I am so looking forward to that. Finally baseball is back can I get Hallelujah?

Here is a great David Wright picture.

So yesterday I was supposed to join the Cyclones in the Polar plunge charity event, but the weather here in New York caused the event to be cancelled. I have to admit that originally the thought of jumping in the Atlantic ocean did not exactly thrill me but it was to be for a great cause and I ended up feeling bad we could not do it. But we have been promised that there will be more plunges in the future. We did all get together and have a lot of fun yesterday anyway so that was nice.

Lots of David Wright stuff to tell you guys today. He has been very vocal about his hopes for the 2010 season. He has been working harder than I ever knew him to do this winter preparing for the new season. David is determined to bounce back, and I can tell you based on what people who have seen David have said there is little doubt he will do just that.
To begin with David trained very hard, took off what some have called his “baby fat" and toned up adding muscle and tone. Nothing dramatic, in fact his weight is within its customary 205- to 210-pound range. His body fat percentage has dropped only marginally. Still he definitely looks different than last year.
David has paid particular attention to his diet eating only healthy foods and cutting out all the junk. Now it’s bananas and water instead of beer and pizza.
One thing David is very sensitive about and that is any talk about him ever cheating with performance enhancing drugs, something he would never do. David was raised in a way that it's not even an option. He is quick to point out it’s not an option for him, his father is an assistant police chief and formerly the department's vice and narcotics captain. As David says "It's something I take a lot of pride in - putting work in. Good or bad, I'm able to put my head on my pillow at night and say I did everything I could to be this player. I'm not going to do anything to try to cheat myself or try to cheat the system
He was seen after his workout getting his lunch out, which he makes himself at home before coming to the park;a peanut butter, honey and jelly sandwich. By his own estimate, Wright eats these sandwiches 75 to 80 percent of the 365 days on the calendar, and he makes almost all of them himself. Jeff Francoeur said “He eats them nonstop, sometimes even for dinner.”
Wright said his affinity for peanut butter sandwiches began in the minor leagues, where the food spread was not all that tempting. Sometimes the best available option was the vat of peanut butter and the loaf of bread in the clubhouse. Often enough, it still is.
“It’s just something that’s quick, it’s easy to make and I like it a lot,” he said. “There’s really nothing more to it. I love ’em.” .....I mean come on how cute is that? :D
Wright likes his routines. During the season he gets up, has breakfast, watches a movie or plays some video games, and then heads into the ball park around 2 p.m. to begin his baseball routines, which include watching video, hitting and weight lifting. David likes following the same patterns if possible, but he is not a fanatic about them. The Mets are asking their players to limit their lifting during this season to prevent injuries, and Wright said he would comply.
More important than the weight lifting, though, is the work he did with Howard Johnson over the winter. Wright hit .307 last season. But he mysteriously lost a lot of his power, falling from a career-high 33 home runs to a career-low 10.
Ho Jo said he thought David might have overcompensated last year and tried to hit too much to right field. It wasn’t necessarily because of the intimidating distances in left, but because hitting to the opposite field was emphasized in spring training.
So during the winter, Johnson worked with Wright to stay back on the ball a little longer, and then get aggressive when the ball gets deeper in the strike zone. It is not just a formula for Wright, either. The Mets want everyone to use the whole field.
David says he would always like to pull the ball a little more, But can’t get away from his strength, which is going to the other gap. He feels that if the result is that he don’t hit as many home runs, so be it. He also thinks maybe its stubbornness or ignorance, but he is not going to try to revamp the swing that I’ve had his whole life just to fit the ballpark. He will just try to grind it out.”

Even Jose noticed and admired David's new biceps ;)

Today is the start of spring training full squad play and starting tomorrow we will be able to watch the games live on SNL Tomorrow’s game with Atlanta was to have had Hisanori Takahashi on the mound but visa issues have changed that. The Mets are still awaiting word on the status of Takahashi’s work visa and have to check with Major League Baseball’s lawyers on Monday. Takahashi cannot pitch in a game in which admission is charged unless he has the visa. So depending on what M.L.B. says, he could pitch the intrasquad game on Wednesday in Orlando if the visa is issued. But Takahashi may have to leave the country to complete the process. If so, he would go to Canada and come back a day or two later. Takahashi was not signed until February, so the Mets did not have time to get him a visa. Meanwhile our other new Japanese acquisition Igarashi, was signed in December, and the Mets had enough time to arrange his visa. Now that Escobar is out for a while Igarashi may end handing the ball to K-Rod. I dono much about him have not seen him pitch in fact he has never pitched in the majors so I am looking forward to seeing what he’s got.In place of Takahashi tomorrow we will have Nelson Figueroa pitching along with Parnell and Dessens. It will be good to se Nelson again, who could forget that outstanding shutout compete game in the last game of 2009,
he was tremendous.
It was also a great game for Angel Pagan as well who went 4-0 with a single, 2 doubles and a triple. Just a homer away from the cycle. I still remember Angel in the batters box in the bottom of the 9th waiting for Nelson to bat and get his shot at the cycle but alas Figgy was out, ended the inning and the game so Angel did not get that shot. A homer in the bottom of the 9th with a cycler on the line? Well why not, it’s a big part of why we watch baseball. :D

Check out some raw amateur footage of the boys in a full squad work out Saturday
Ike, wanna wave back to New York? ;)

Thanks for that link RazorzEdge88.

So this will be my last post here in Mets Winter report, it’s time to move on to Mets 2010 a thread I will stat soon. I wanna thank saucy, Syam and all, the guys who contributed to this thread. It has been fun keeping the sprit of baseball alive during the long cold winter.

Yesterday the Mets held an intrasquad game and the Mets beat the Mets 4-1. For sure the most exciting part of that game had to be Jose Reyes who hit a two run triple against Toby Stoner and fly around the bases like the Jose we all have come to love. After the game he declared himself free of pain and leme tell you seeing him run like that with no effort and totally free of restriction or pain was thrilling.
Jose is back baby! It was the first time Jose Played in a game since last May, he hit the first pitch he saw down the right field line and received a loud ovation from the crowd at Tradition Field and had a big smile on his face as he reached third base.
"To be honest with you, it felt a little weird when I stepped in the batter's box," Reyes said. "It was a long time that I don't face a big-league pitcher. When I hit the ball, I said, 'Oh, God, I have to run now.'"
Reyes said he never thought about stopping at second, though. He said he wasn't running quite at full speed, but with the ball rattling around the right-field corner, he didn't have to.
The triple sparked chants of "Jooo-see, Jose, Jose, Jose" among the fans who showed up to watch the game. Reyes struck out in his next and only other at-bat, but that was irrelevant.
The fact that Reyes was healthy and running the bases with no problem was enough to make it an encouraging day for the Mets.

And yes, Jose did bat third, something I just can’t wrap my head around no matter how hard I try. Yea I know you guys are sick of hearing me complain about that but I worry the move will reinforce some old bad habits with Jose. I don’t want him thinking anything but down and hard, or thinking about hitting fly balls
or starting up and cutting the ball even a little bit. I also worry he will start to get long in the swing, I would hate to see him turning into that guy who is long in the swing and start hitting those lazy balls to the running track. So is this the last of me bitchin about this?......prolly not. ;)

Today if the rain holds out the boys will play the Braves for their first spring training game.
Line up will be Gary Matthews Jr hitting leadoff and play center field, followed in order by Luis Castillo, (2nd base) Jose Reyes, (ss) David Wright,(third) Jason Bay,(left) , Jeff Francoeur (right), Ike Davis (first), Nelson Figureo will pitch and Chris Coste will catch. Mike Jacobs will DH
I am sure we will see Nelson throw that awesome curve I love to see him pitch so much, if only Maine could learn to throw that pitch.

So that‘s it for me and the Mets winter 2009-10 report, hope to see you guys in the new NY Mets 2010 thread. :D
