WTF? I was doing some cleaning up of old programs and associated icons that i dont use or never had - And when i went to play some music - NOTHING!

Checked the settings in 'Control Panel' and it says that I have no audio device on my PC

I can download songs and still play vids/movies - just can't hear them!

What did i do?  ](*,)

Check and see again,

Right click on My Computer > Properties, a window will pop up. Click on Hardware tab, then Device Manager, another window pops up called Device Manager, see entry for

"Sound, video and game controllers"

Whatever is under that can be called up by double clicking on them. See that they're 'enabled', and also try out the 'troubleshoot'. Otherwise, one of the programs may have deleted stuff you need (?)

Unfortunately, Noni, I don't know much about the technical side. So you might have to wait for other people's advice if the troubleshoot doesn't help.

Have you deleted your drivers? Go on the website for whoever makes your speakers, try to find your model, and then see what they offer for download.

PS: Drivers (as you probably know, but JIC), are the software which tells the computer how to use the hardware.

Goto control panel /system / hardware/ device manager/ sound, video and game controllers. Select your audio card. If all appears ok goto the drivers tab and select uninstall. Now when you restart or select add new hardware, windows should find your card and lead you through reinstalling the drivers. Possibly when you were cleaning up, something didn't uninstall right and fucked up some settings. Doing a reinstall after an uninstall often sorts it out.

Have you recently installed new software that may have changed some of your sound drivers?

Try rebooting your computer and see if that helps.

Thanks for all your help guys, i tried following here the steps but now the computer just screams at me everytime a dialogue box opens ](*,)

One last ditch attempt - its A Packard Bell and i'm using windows XP - dunno if that means shit to anyone

but now the computer just screams at me everytime a dialogue box opens

So I guess that means it is now making some sound. What does it scream? "F..k off you w..ker & leave my F..king drivers out of this"? ;)

Have you tried System Restore? If you are using Windows XP. This lets you return the Settings in your PC to an earlier date.
Programmes - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore
Choose a date earlier to when you did your clean-up operations. Has worked for me in a similar situation. If however you have deleted a file this will not restore it ! Best of luck!

Ummmmmmmm......................How does it scream at you if it doesn't have any sound?

i'm guessing it's the internal speaker that is "screaming" at him. it's probably beeping like nuts for some reason... you can try a system restore to say...the day before the problem started up. you may have to restart in safe mode to get system restore to work. you do that by pressing F8 just a second or so after you turn your computer on and selecting "safe mode with network support."
