Yesterday afternoon, the sound suddenly stopped on YouTube. I shut shut down my Firefox and started it up again, but the sound was still gone. (It works for all other video sites.) I rebooted my laptop and still no sound. Even after start-up this morning, the sound is still absent.

I've cleared the cache and cookies and still no sound.

Any ideas what's going on and how to fix it?

I already tried that when it was first posted. I get no sound from YouTube, either off-site or on-site.

Check the volume control on the video itself. ;)

Yes, yesterday the volume control on you tube videos started resetting to off with each video I watched...that should take care of it

Check the volume control on the video itself. ;)

Man, do I feel dumb! That did it. I've never had to adjust the volume before, and since they only show a speaker and not a slider, I didn't notice.

Thanks, guys.

But I still feel dumb.

^ Thanks never happened to me before ! Sems to be a new feature OK if you know, wouldnt be caught again !

I have the same problem, although I have the volume slider turned up, some videos start muted. Looks like Youtube generally has issues again.

Yup, same thing was happening to me too. Just on YouTube.

^ That seems to be the case. It was set to zero again this morning. At least I knew what to do this time. ..|

At least it's not an isolated issue. There is a thread on it on Google's Product Forum...

Right here

...with 17 pages (as of this writing) of commentary and discussion on this issue with it happening to people over the last few days. Two relevant pieces of information:

1) The recent posts say over the last few hours that the issue has now been solved.
2) This workaround seems to have worked for some people who had the issue:

To those who have to unmute the videos every time they pay one, what are your Flash storage settings? I discovered quite by accident that I had disabled local storage for Flash and after enabling it Youtube remembers the volume.

It appears that Youtube for some odd reason have changed to using Flash storage to store stuff like volume and player size.

To check, right click on a Youtube video, click on "Settings". A small window will pop up, click on the tab that has a picture of a folder. It should say something like "How much information can Youtube store on your computer" and have a slider and a checkbox saying "Never ask again".

If the slider is on 0 move it over 1 to 10Kb, and uncheck the checkbox if it is ticked. You may get an popup asking if it is OK to store stuff on your computer the next time you play a Youtube video. Click OK.

This worked for me, hopefully it will work for others.

It does seem that the settings have been returned to what they used to be, checking again I find no adjustment to volume is needed . Problem solved by Yahoo!

I noticed this on chrome too.

Reckon I just updated my chrome and randomly, one video wouldn't play at all. Many other videos are fine but this one particular video "crashed" and because of the stupid youtube history crap, it's basically stuck.
