So im a bit of a fan of medical oddities, keeps me thinking about human health and disease and always brings up new questions to be answered.

Im not a dermatologist so I dont have a lot that I can add to this however there is some suggestion that this is epidermodysplasia verruciformis or Lewandowsky-Lutz dysplasia. Maybe some of the other medical and para medical Jubbers can add something to the discussion.

The patient had the lesions on his hands and feet, elsewhere he looked and seemed in good health. The growths began when he was 14 years old, and began in the area of his wrists. The problem is much more severe on his palms and fingers.

Missionary encounters extremely bizarre skin condition in Eastern Europe

Please can we remember this is a no flame zone, this is a real patient with a real problem and Ii am after discussion not "eww gross, that s sick" etc. I would hope and expect that here at JUB wed be a little less judgemental than that.

Too cool.

It almost looks like the skin is calcifying.

Is it solid, or spongy?

fingernail like apparently. maybe I didn't make it clear that this isnt someone I have seen or examined, this is a medical oddity I have come across on another health forum that i thought i'd put up here to see if any of the brilliant jubbers could add anything interesting.

I have no medical knowledge whatsoever.

But I am intrigued by conditions like this.

that condition is just one of the suggestion made elsewhere as to the diagnosis, i have not seen any definitive diagnosis. EV is associated with a number of Human pappiloma virus subtypes and has a fairly high neoplastic (cancer) conversion rate, as high as 25%

Could they have done skin grafts when he was younger? It looks too far evolved to try that now though.

Geeez! Poor guy. He must live secluded. Medical condition or not, that sight would freak out people in public. I guess it is safe to say he can't jerk off.

Seriously, I'd have begged my doctors to peel the skin off.

Are they using a dremel disc cutter to remove parts of it in those last two pics??

I feel so sorry for that guy , he must be going through so much pain inside, i only hope that this is a problem that can be fixed or reversed for him , no one deserves to have something like that happen to them

No offense to the guy cuz thats gotta suck major donkey dick

but he looks like hes turning into the "The Thing" off of the Fantastic Four

poor guy....

In the comments section of the blog listed in the OP, someone suggested a mammalian papillomavirus.

This is what wikipedia says, and here' an interesting link:

Shope papilloma virus

Viruses Genomes COTTONTAIL RABBIT PAPILLOMAVIRUS

It says that they spread by fleas and ticks, and it's considered viral in it's infection. Much like warts or CPV.

I would imagine that it took awhile to get as bad as this case did, and this is what it looks like unchecked.

If I read everything right, it was have to be treated with a combination of viral drugs, and external treatmens, much like you'd treat warts.

It's easy to figure out that your typical "syllic acid" wart remover from the local drug store ain't gonna take care of that!

Here's my question:

How is it that this type of infection can be localised to just the outer extremities? I would think it could travel up the legs, arms.

That's a good question.

Maybe it has something to do with blood flow, being that hands and feet are extremities.

As I said Im no expect on dermatology but apart from all the other aspects of a rash or skin lesion one of the things that often characterise one rash or lesion from another is their distribution, eg excema affects the flexor surfaces of the joints eg inside of elbow whereas psoriasis affects the extonsor surfaces. I cant really explain how thins happens but different skin disorders follow very predictable skin distributions. In this case you would describe this lesion starting on the hands and feet and progressing gradually a short way up the limbs a "glove and stocking" distribution. If theres any jubbers more knowledgeable in skin pathology then I maybe they could explain some of the reasons for highly predictable distributions in skin lesions.
