Hey guys,

My Sister has a Gateway Desktop and she was doing system recovery on it because it had a few issues, Halfway thru the recovery it failed because of a scratch on the Recovery CD so insted of cancelling the recovery she turned the PC so now shes getting the Operating System Not Found, I checked the BIOS and everthing is fine, I tried to use my Windows XP recovery cd lol hoping it would work but it just gave me the WRONG MACHINE! message, Is there anything I can do before I go out and buy Microsoft Windows? And if I do go out and buy the Microsoft Windows XP cd will it work on that computer? Thanks for any help! ](*,)

Could you contact Gateway and request a replacement CD? If that should not work, then I think the only other choice would be to buy a new CD.

another windows XP cd whether you buy it or try one from another computer is not going to work on her computer to "recover" the system. if you buy a new XP cd you can certainly install it, but none of the programs will be there and the data would also likely be lost.

the recovery process failing likely caused it to corrupt the system files, there really probably wasn't anything your sister could do but turn off the power.

how bad is the scratch on the CD? you could try one of those scratch repair kits. the one i have has repaired my windows CD. i got mine at wal mart. it's Memorex optifix pro, and i think it was like 20 bucks. it looks like a portable cd player and plugs into an outlet. it's very easy to use.

other than that, you could try to get a replacement system disk from gateway.

another option...is to download an ISO of Knoppix (it's Linux on a live CD). it's runs all off the CD so that you could use knoppix to start the computer and then save whatever data she needs to a USB drive or something like that. at the very least it would enable you to get the data off the computer before trying something more drastic. because at this point...unless you get that CD working or a replacement CD from gateway, you are likely to lose the data that was on the computer. there are a lot of threads in this forum about where to get knoppix and how to burn it to a CD. i'll see if i can find a good one.

The computer is kinda old it had Windows ME and when she tried to do system recovery the recovery failed because the large scratch on the cd. The files and things arnt important she just needs it to do her school work on this summer thats why I was thinking about buying a Microsoft XP Upgrade cd and install XP on it do you think that will work?

if you buy an upgrade XP cd, it may work fine. it also may not. an upgrade CD looks for a earlier version of windows on the computer. if it can't find it, it will ask you for the CD to the earlier version to make sure you had an earlier version. if the CD your sister has is scratched badly enough, it seems like the upgrade CD might not work (although...i think that might be unlikely).

honestly, if all she uses it for is school work, i would seriously try installing a free Linux OS first (something like Ubuntu, although i personally prefer knoppix). both are free, both have Live CD's that will let you check it out to see if everything on the computer will work before hand and both read/write to your windows files (aka partitions). i would try that before going out to spend 80-90 bucks on windows XP.

ps did you try to repair the scratch yet? i've managed to get that to work on my windows XP cd that didn't work anymore.

First off, What is the model Number of the machine?

You may be able to use a recovery partion that may be installed on your computer.
When you start up on your screen you'll see someting like "F10: boot into Recovery". Hit F10 (or whatever it says) and it will boot into recovery. From there follow the on-screen prompts.

since her computer is old:

if you want to do any sort of an upgrade; some stores like frys electronics will sell you an oem version of windows xp if you buy computer hardware, like a harddrive. trick is: you HAVE to ask; they won't offer and only SOME hardware qualifies.

it'll still cost you about $100 plus the upgrade components.

i'm not suggesting you go out and spend money; i'm saying that if you decide to spend some money, might as well go for xp AND new parts.

Thanks guys for all the help.... I didnt have any luck with the computer it was like 8 years old anyway so I just went ahead today and bought a New Dell XPS 410, I gave the gateway to my brother to play around with, I didnt see putting alot of money into a 8 year old computer when I was looking into a new desktop anyway.
