More specificly, does anyone know of an actual document case of contracting HIV from engaging in oral sex? I know this topic has been talked about before, but I was wondering if anyone know of an actual "DOCUMENTED CASE". I do know that it is possilbe and rather unlikely, but has anyone any info on this. Gay, straight, or other wise.

While I'm sure there are documented cases that you could find, even by asking your own doctor, I could not site a specific case or cases. Oral sex is generally considered "low risk"for HIV. Of course, that does not mean "no risk". There is some risk, especially if there are existing sores in the mouth or there is a healing process going on from recent dental work, like an extraction, a filling, teeth cleaning and root planing. One should not engage in oral sex until any dental work is completely healed. One should also not engage in oral sex immediately after brushing your teeth. The act of brushing your teeth does often create microscopic tears around the gums that you cannot see and that show no visible signs of bleeding. Remember, in order for successful HIV transmission to occur, there must be blood to blood (blood/semen) contact. That is what makes anal sex so "high risk". Anal penetration can cause many microscopic tears in the colon. That makes a perfect environment for the transmission of the HIV virus and why condoms are a must.

But, I'm not a doctor. I would suggest you go to the following free website and read up about the lastest in oral sex and HIV. It is a very comprehensive site created and update by global centers for disease control and the medical communities (doctors). They may have some documented cases there.

Also, I suggest you go to the CDC's site* and type in STD's and HIV infections.

There is a slight chance of contracting HIV, thus sometimes AIDS, by oral, but as said above, the anal encounters are the more risky -- thus the encouragment of condoms and a water-based lube. Lots of lube, lol.

me4you is correct- there are cases of oral tranmission of HIV in the literature.

The problem with determining the mode of transmission is that most gay men perform multiple acts (e.g. deep kissing, oral, anal, etc) when they are sexually active, so it's difficult to determine which act was responsible for the transmission. There have been a few documented cases where oral sex was the only sexual activity and the mode of transmission believed to be oral sex.

So, know that the risk is there, as it is with any exchange of body fluids but the relative risk is low compared to other higher-risk acts (e.g. barebacking).

^for most STIs the risk is not in the cum, it is simply in the sucking.

And seen as the thread is titled "oral sex and disease" I'd like to remind you that there is an increase in syphilis among gay men in many areas of the world, for which oral sex is a contributing factor.

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are also transmitted during oral sex and they are all much more infectious than HIV and the risk is simply in the sucking - no cum required.

The disease is in highest concentration in the pre-cum. Syphilis can be on the skin in the early stages, and during a rash phase.

I wouldn't risk it. People who swallow semen nowadays are crazy.

let me know if i am wrong, but i don't think you have to swallow to contract HIV. I myself would never swallow, I think it is nasty. But I guess more over thats why I started this thread. For my knowledge and everyone elses, what are the realistic possiblities to contract HIV from mutual oral sex. Is there a particular % of the population that has contracted it from oral..............

I think body positives own surveys of their members came back with a figure of 8% of them believed that their main risk factor causing their infection was oral sex. You can of course debate that til the cows come home as Karabulut detailed above attributing infection to a single behaviour is problematic in the least.

Don't be too surprised if the next big scare is oral, head and neck cancers. There's some new research studies looking at increases in these cancers and a possible connection with human papilloma virus (HPV) which is the same virus that causes anogenital warts. The suspected transmission mode is oral sex.

There is an HPV vaccine but it is currently recommended only for young women as a preventative for cervical cancers that are also caused by HPV. As usual, gay men are not being adequately researched as a high-risk group for HPV and it's related diseases.
