Interesting study... I'll have to look at the actual article in the NEJM for the specifics. But on the surface, it appears only to be the first and that many others will be needed before we can conclusively say this is true. Logically, it makes sense. But from the article sorted, I can see a lot of variables that could ultimately prove the conclusion incorrect.

So, what, I should now look twice at every straight guy I know who gets throat cancer?

In 10 years they'll tell us that eating semen will lower the risk of stomache cancer.

Everything in life causes cancer. Including sex. But hey, we gotta live, right?

Nuns don't get cervical cancer.
People who have butt-sex have a LOT more colon cancer.

Just get your recommended check-ups; it's all you can do besides live a living death trying to avoid cancer.

drinking hot liquids (like tea or coffe) can also cause throat cancer. But are you gonna stop drinking?

And as boogerqueesha said (what a long name) anal sex can also cause cancer...

And to think the most I'd thought I can get after oral sex was a sore throat.

It's the exposure to the virus that increases the risk of throat cancer, the same way it does for cervical cancer. Not sure if avoiding cumming in the mouth makes a difference as far as cancer goes, but it can when it comes to AIDS.

Okay, I was going to hold off posting here again... but I couldn't. First off, there is no evidence that every piece of food we eat increases the risk of cancer. Nor does the hot liquids. While I don't think this study proves anything, it is a bit more than just nonsense. And what's the proof that anal sex leads to colon cancer? I haven't seen that one either.

Not sure if avoiding cumming in the mouth makes a difference as far as cancer goes, but it can when it comes to AIDS

Actually, the difference isn't that great with HIV either.

Oh Shit!!! I better get my will together cause I am living on borrowed time!

At this rate, we should just lock ourselves up in a trunk and wait until the end of our days ... oh wait, I just found this study that says darkness causes cancer ... #-o

It isn't?

I was told that your risk goes up if you let someone cum in your mouth and that you will get HIV if you have cuts/sores in your mouth and if the guy who you're giving oral sex to is poz.

Also, if you're blowing someone who is poz and you swallow you can easily get it that way.
No, it isn't. In other words, there is a statistically small risk. Small but not insignificant.

Obviously factors like open wounds increase your risk, but still far from being a certainty.

Either way, it's not a risk I'm willing to take.

Slightly inflammatory thread title..

Anyway, throat cancer here I come!

Let me clarify. First off, if you're giving head to somebody he HAS to be HIV positive (aka have the virus in his system.... not necessarily test poz) for you to have ANY chance of getting it.

The risk of getting it is small from oral sex, but as stated not insignificant considering the effects. The risk does not change much at all regardless of whether he cums in your mouth or not. There is precum and fluid transfer whether he cums or not. And swallowing does not increase the risk versus just spitting as far as I know (hard to get good studies on this). The acidic nature of your stomach kills the virus. It is contracted through the oral cavity. Having sores in your mouth definitely increases your risk.

But if you have unprotected oral sex with somebody HIV+ you are by no means guaranteed of becoming infected... in fact, it's quite unlikely as the chances seem to be small. But the chance exists. Even unprotected anal sex does not guarantee you will be infected but the odds there are substantially higher.

There's a good side to this. In a few years time, or sooner, there will be HPV vacination for men widely availiable. Does anyone know if you can buy a vac. through your doctor at this time?

the study is essentially bullshit ;) i read a long (german) article why the results are kinda flawed. i'll see if i find it again, and if they have some international sources.

here is the (german) article:

http://www.spiegel.de/wissenschaft/mensch/0,1518,482252,00.html

basically: the 250% number is a wrong interpretation of the original study, and only applies under very specific conditions. the increase in risk for the "usual" people is 0.11% IF the rest of the study is correct, which they doubt because there are some other flaws as well.
