You Tube has a vast library of monochrome Hollywood made films relating to soldiers returning home after WW11 and the challenges that they faced readjusting to civilian life, and having to deal not just with loss of limbs, but also the psychological trauma that very many servicemen must endure, and overcome at the end of a war.

The Vietnam War also epitomises the inadequacies of society in dealing with demobilised servicemen attempting to reintegrate into civilian life lugging psychiatric trauma that society fails to recognise, and confront with appropriate clinical care.

It is true to say all major military powers face similar trials when their soldiers return to civilian life at the end of a conflict that has engaged the soldier in trauma which alone he cannot cope with. Former British service personnel are also coping with the the trauma of The Falklands Campaign, and more recently Iraq, and Afghanistan.

We can do much, much more to assist returning military personnel deal with their trauma by investing more resources that target demobilised military personnel whose mental health needs are not being adequately addressed.
