Hi all
welcome to my new thread.
my intention is to create 2 stories and do some weaving. So those of you who are willing to go with me for the ride should read both this and what i will call part 2 of my other thread potential. Check this thread and that for updates from time to time.
Cheers and welcome to the ride.

The two brothers lined up side by side amongst the other club members waiting for the starter. Muscles tensed momentarily and in an instant they were off moving down the beach towards the white breakers. The brothers were as different as can be, one a huge powerful man with short cropped blond hair the other well built but slight and having a curly mop of brown hair. There were other differences too as everyone who lived in Piper’s Point knew. The brothers porpoised through the surf, one confronting the ocean in a powerful surge and sending spray high in the air, the other lithe, graceful, and slicing through with barely a wake. Today the surf was pounding and the bigger man reached the green water behind the cascading surf first, while the pack behind struggled to pass through the white water. The pack settled into a rhythm as the giant man rounded the striped bouy then the second white buoy, he was well in front by several body lengths and began swimming back towards the beach. Many tried to catch a wave from the back of the pack but dropped off, however, a few at the front of the pack were more successful riding the wave and catching up to the big man. Five on the wave using the oceans power to race headlong towards the beach. Up, wading, running the five raced towards the beach turning flag, reaching it simultaneously, where the big man used all his weight to crush the bodies together so that only he remained upright then turned right and ran through the soft sand across the finishing line. The others scrambled to their feet and ran after him finishing seconds behind. Pete Smyth the surf club president strode over to congratulate his son Zach. Their two massive hulks dwarfing everyone else on the beach as their animated display of self delight became equally loud and jocular. Jason Smyth sat on the sand sucking deep breaths having been winded by the heavy fall, he reached out to shake the hands of the other guys around him and with that simple action epitomized the main difference between the two brothers more than words could ever tell.

Jason recovered quickly, taking his time as shook a few more hands, added a few short conversations about analyzing the surf conditions, and then walked up the beach towards the bright blue beach umbrella and the thin lipped whale of a woman underneath. His mother, however, continued watching her bull of a son through her dark shades and didn’t acknowledge Jason as he leaned down, picked up his things and made towards the clubhouse. Once there the cool shade rejuvenated his step and he passed through the member’s entrance and into the change rooms. A cool shower, a change out of his speedos into his bike pants and Jason was soon on his bike pushing his slim body up the incline and out towards the main road from Piper’s Beach to the highway. Jason was not a loner outside of his family, lack of acknowledgement from them was a common occurrence so there was little to be gained from fighting it. It was just something you learned to live with and in his eyes just the way it was.

As brothers Zach and Jason practically ignored each other these days. Despite being eighteen months younger, Jason, had always been too quick for Zach to chase, using his speed and smart comments to taunt and infuriate. Jason had his friends and Zach had his, polar opposites, and each kept away from the other. For Zach it was a learned response from his parents whilst for Jason it was a way to escape from his unhappy family situation. As little boys there were fights. Many, many fights not always won by the older brother. The heart … that was something else, if you cared you got really hurt and the ache wouldn’t go away. If no one cared well they couldn’t hurt you could they? So often defeated in body but never in spirit Jason eventually began keeping his distance from his bullying brother and uncaring parents. Thus the alienation from family had begun.

Jason pushed his bike hard and his body strained as he tried to absolve his thoughts and rid them from his mind. Punishing exercise was his way of ridding the negativity of his family from his mind. Many times he had wondered why he was born to this family. Why his mother was so cold towards him? Why his father doted on Zach as though he was an only child? Today, once again illustrated the gulf between his parent’s relationship with Zach and their relationship with him.

On his right the train traveling north came into view. Jason’s legs pumped like pistons as he tried to match the train for speed, but he was soon left behind well before it slowed down approaching the Maxton station. Riding his bike and leaving Piper’s Point behind, there was only the steady rhythm and familiarity with the pedals to occupy his mind almost as if it was his own mantra leaving his mind and spirit free.

Corinne Smyth pursed her thin lips as she looked out the car window seeing Jason collecting the neat line of washing flapping in the late breeze. She hadn’t put it there of course. For as long as anyone could remember he had fended for himself. She took no pleasure in his superb academic results, handsome face, nor in his impressive sporting prowess. She had never bonded to him as a child and never would. These days they would call it post natal depression or some other syndrome but in her case it was the capacity to give all her love to one child and as little as possible to the other.

Zach on the other hand was her shining star. In winter when the football season got underway she felt truly alive. She would be there at every game watching, cheering and supporting. Oh, how good a player he was, she thought. He was so strong and the way he ran at the opposition was like a bowling ball thundering down the alley towards the helpless pins, and his bone crunching defence was enough to soften up any opposition. Since he had been playing in the front row the Maxton Marlins had a near perfect record losing only two games and that was when Zach was injured. Tough as nails he was, a mountain among giant men and always giving better than he got.

She herself was not the sporty type despite success in the shot put at school carnivals. It really was such a pity sumo wrestling was not a sport for girls. The only things about her that could be described as thin were her hair, her lips and her intellect. It was better left to others to exercise and work hard on their trim bodies while she stuck to her diet only having two cheeseburgers for lunch today. Her voracious appetite matched only by her husband Pete and son Zach. Jason, well he didn’t count.

She had intended to be a loving mother to her second son, however, it was impossible for her and another massive failure. Over time her interest evaporated, the guilt remained, and by the time he was a teenager Jason had to do most things for himself. She hated the way he taunted Zach and stood up to his older brother despite being half the size.

It was just as well Jason had moved out. Her disinterest in him had grown to resentment in the time he was away at university. It was heightened even further now he was back for summer break. She hated the way he pranced around on that idiotic bike wearing those ridiculous clothes and was incensed he had joined up once more with the surf club. This was her domain, Pete’s and Zach’s, and more so since he had left for the city. She was glad he lost today and doubly glad Zach had won. Yes, go Jason she thought, my life is better without you. If only he would go even further away. Even in her mind the resentment of having him here and seeing him flash by on that cycle was enough to make her cold beady eyes narrow, her jaw lower revealing several of her chins and her broad face twist unattractively.

She snapped out of her daydream and set to work preparing the evening meal. Lamb chops, a lot of chops, a mountain of chops piled high, gravy, potatoes and vegetables. It was a lot of food for three giants and one skinny misfit and damn Pete for insisting Jason come to dinner.

Golden bodies basked in the warm sunshine of a glorious beach day. Beach umbrellas and igloos had sprung up in a colorful rash over the wide expanse of Piper’s Beach despite, few, if any people using them. Parents slapped copious amounts of 30+ sun screen over anything that moved and young faces grinned with the fluro zinc that would become this summer’s essential beach fashion. Small children giggled with delight as they jumped tiny waves lapping the shore while knee deep parents watched on anxiously. Dark sunglasses, beach umbrellas, bronzed bodies, sun cream, body boards the endless list of beach icons were coming out more and more as spring raced towards summer.

Jason was body surfing the small runners of the day. His light frame was making the difficult task look deceptively easy. He stood waiting for a wave then dove in front, just as it came, kicking vigorously until he could use its delicate energy to sweep him towards the beach. Up then out again for another one, the superb day and cool water was a perfect reminder of why he loved being out of the city. His lithe movements, beautiful and sleek to watch, provided the promise of a good athlete in his prime. Quite a few eyes appreciated his trim body as he gracefully glided up the beach to his friends. Spreading out his towel he joined them in collecting the sun’s rays. Sunglasses firmly in place he lay on his back letting the warmth seep into his glistening body.

The sounds of the beach filled his ears then drifted away has he daydreamed pleasant thoughts. A face formed in his mind as he remembered it again. He remembered his dimpled smile and the way his stunning blue eyes twinkled even if it was only from a photograph from across the internet. Neither of them had chased the other but chance had found them sometimes in each others company on the internet. Then one night it had suddenly dawned on him, maybe it was because of the madness of the full moon, regardless of the reason - his physical attraction was ignited.

Sudden movement to his left snapped him out of his reverie. Sitting up quickly he relaxed gathering his hands around his drawn up knees. That was then this is now, he thought. His two friends were fun to be around and great house mates. This week it was his turn to keep the house clean and tidy, Glenn was the Chef and Aaron was in charge of everything else.

It was a far cry from the irresponsible days of his youth. To anyone seeing Jason now there was no way of knowing how wild he was then. At school he taunted everyone including the teachers and was the cause of frequent fights. The times Corinne was called to the school, she pleaded for them to take any action they saw fit. Too bad they did away with corporal punishment in her opinion, she would have suggested the rack as a possibility if she could. She didn’t care, he didn’t care and it never mattered what they did anyway. There was a turn around in attitude as he turned sixteen and some of the anger had subsided replaced by the need to prove himself to everyone. His stunning change in attitude was a complete revelation to his teachers who accordingly encouraged his new found success resulting in superb academic results. His sporting ability flourished equally as well while, socially he drew more friends into his circle. The thing he couldn’t shake was the legacy of being unwanted, that, was something he carried with him everywhere. It fuelled his anger just as it fuelled his drive to excel. What didn’t heal was his inability to form a meaningful relationship, he could not and would not allow anyone to get too close. Certainly not close enough for anyone to touch his heart.

The friends stirred beside him and soon all three were back in the surf having the good time at the beach young men always do. Surf, sun, beach cricket, Frisbee, ball throwing and of course fun. It was all good. The warm afternoon, light breeze and surf made it a perfect way to finish the week. Only one thing could make it better!

What an interesting turn, Michael. Weaving two stories together. I like it.

You have given us an extremely good and descriptive beginning of this new venture. I like Jason already and, of course, have a distaste for the rest of his family. I have a feeling this will be a very intriguing story. The parallel between Alex and Jason are very similar in not wanting anyone to come to close to their hearts. Alex was able to overcome it and hopefully the same will happen for Jason.

Can't wait for the next installment.

This story seems very interesting!! I hope Jason finds what he's looking for in life, and for some reason I get the feeling that maybe a reconciliation between him and Zach at least is on the way? Maybe...I've always longed for family since I'm an only child. Probably just me though haha. Good work!

Wonderful beginning ... a detailed picture - as Wyndhampaul has said, a well-painted canvas. You build Jason up to be so very appealing it is difficult to comprehend his monstrous mother. Zack is not bad per se, he has learned his responses from his parents. I have a feeling he will change over time, or else hit a wall & destruct. On verra!

Michael,
As I PM'd the other day, I somehow missed this paired story the first time around, although you started posting it before I came over to JUB, so I would still have played catch-up.

I've enjoyed your writing immensely. You have a lot of talent, and deep, well crafted story lines. I thought there might be a bit more here, since I see your next "Potential" post is 10 March 2010, which ALMOST brings me to current.

Thank you for carving the time you've managed to for working on these stories for us. I suspect we have a lot in common, even being a world apart from each other.
