Paige Davis Returns to 'Trading Spaces'

NEW YORK (AP) — Paige Davis is moving back to TLC's "Trading Spaces." The Broadway actress and TV host will return to the once-popular home makeover series beginning in January, the network said in a statement Thursday. In 2005, TLC announced Davis would no longer host "Trading Spaces" and transitioned the series to a host-less format.

Davis had perkily hosted the show, which features neighbors swapping homes and redecorating a room, since 2001. Besides "Trading Spaces," she's also appeared on Broadway in the musicals "Beauty and the Beast" and "Chicago."

"Trading Spaces" will now be produced by A. Smith & Co. Productions, the TV production company responsible for Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" and "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares."

The series was formerly produced by Philadelphia-based Banyan Productions.

The new season begins shooting this month and will be filmed entirely in high-definition. Designers Doug Wilson, Laurie Hickson-Smith, Frank Bielec and Hildi Santo-Thomas will also return to the show, alongside carpenters and other designers to be announced later.

TLC is owned by Discovery Communications Inc.

I don't watch the show very often, but I saw Paige Davis as "Roxie" in Chicago and she was great!

I watched for a while after she left, but eventually grew out of it. I just may have to pick it up again. They made too many changes to the show and it didn't have the same feel that it did when it started.

Why did she leave in the first place? Was it because of Chicago?

She was fired by TLC. They retooled the show a couple years ago, trying to boost ratings. It didn't work and now it looks like they're crawling back to her.

As the producers originally explained, a 'host' was too constricting in what they could do. Unless the houses were in very close proximity, it was extremely difficult to film. (Remember that episode when Paige had to drive back and forth across the city?)

Without a host, not only could they film exchanges in different cities, they could film in different states.

I, too, stopped watching not long after Paige left the show but watched an episode a week or so ago when I noticed a designer (Goil) who is currently appearing on a designer challenge show here in Canada on HGTV. The female designer who worked opposite him, however, was rather 'full-figured' and was dressed in high heels and a slinky dress which had her hanging out all over place. My first thought was, "Is this what the show has come to?"

I may start watching again when the others return in the new season.

I didn't realize how much I enjoyed Paige and what she brought to the show until after she was gone. It will be interesting to see if she can bring back some of the fun that has been missing since she left. However, if I see that redhead paste tissue paper to the wall one more time I think I'll tune out even with Paige back.
