Painting your walls.

Black carpet is sheer hell to keep clean. Black walls mark like crazy. Repainting over black walls is a pain in the butt and can sometimes take up to 6 coats of paint. Black is really quite depressing after a while...listen to what your Uncle eMichael says!

Red is a very aggressive colour, it is not calming and does not help relieve tension. (It is used in environments where people need to be aggressively motivated.) Usually people tire of red (and other primary and strong colours) very quickly. Yellow is not a good colour - ever noticed that all the mad masters (van Gogh etc) always painted in yellow.

I am not an interior decorator but I would think that using black and red would severely retrict what other colours you cn use for soft furnishings, art, furniture etc.

If you want the room to be dark, use thick solar (3 pass) lined curtains. It does not matter what colours you use on the walls, if you do not use blackouts, you will not achieve darkness. Please remember that you cannot have darkness and good fresh air ventilation. Sleep specialist people will tell you that air is sometimes more important than light.

If you want red and black, how about heavy black curtains, red bedspread, ebony and chrome furniture, silver grey carpet and light off-white walls? Don't worry too much about the carpet - it is the last thing people remember about a room.

When I got my apartment I went crazy with color. However, Im kinda skeptical about black walls, might make things feel like they are closing in on you.
I painted my living rooms walls fire engine red and I LOVE IT. It always makes me feel happy even if its shitty out.
Also in my bedroom, I painted the walls like a light coffee color (Cafe au lait) and did dark chocolate trip, and dark green carpet. It looks just like a hotel room and my friends cant say enough good things about it :-)

Anyway you go about it though, Im sure it will be cool cause you're making it yours and what you like. Maybe check out Borders and the interior design section to get ideas on colors and what will coordinate. Have fun!

Keep in mind that the bedroom will probably be where you'll spend most of your time... Try not to focus so much on making a statement, but instead make it a haven for yourself...

I suggest looking in home improvement magazines or books. Check out the HGTV channel on cable. They're always doing renovations and makeovers.

If red is your favorite color, don't go strictly Crayola red, but go with a shade of red (burgundy, for example). Check out the paint samples at your local paint store.

Also, keep in mind, carpets can be very expensive, also. Don't paint or buy carpet until you know what you want. It's easier to find paint to match the carpet than to find carpet to match the paint.

Here's an example of someone's room painted in a shade of red ("Cranberry Whip")

Here's a neat little tool to help you out.

Go here:

http://www.sherwin-williams.com/pro/paint_colors/paint_color_samples/

Click on Launch Color Visualizer

Click on Paint An Interior

Click on Bedroom

Pick a bedroom that looks most like yours.

Now, pick a color from the color chart

The sample will give you coordinating colors...

To paint the ceiling or trim, drag the color chart you like to the ceiling or trim icon on the right side...

Have fun!

I say paint your room whatever color you want. Compared to other decorating items, paint is cheap and, if you don't like the color, you can always change it.

I have red walls in my dining room and love them. Finding the "right" shade of red can be difficult - I know from experience - so don't buy a bunch of paint until you're sure of the shade you like. Buy quart cans and actually paint some on the wall to see how it looks. I can guarantee that it will look different at home and paint swatches won't look the same either. Save yourself a lot of grief and spend money on quarts beforehand. You'll be glad you did.

Regarding the carpet - black carpet shows EVERYTHING. You'll see every thread and piece of lint and it may drive you crazy. It also shows normal household dust that you can't see on other colors. Instead of black, what about a dark charcoal gray? It'll show a little less and may look like black once it's in your room, anyway. Black flooring "recedes" and can actually make the room look larger - charcoal will do the same thing. I remodeled a bathroom a few years ago and changed the floor to black slate. The room looked twice as big (it's a tiny bathroom) and I couldn't believe the difference.

Have fun experimenting with redecorating! If you do something you end up hating, you can always redo it later. Good luck!!!

This is the best I could do, it's a picture from the phone. But, this was what came to my mind to put on my wall. It's my drawing, you can just barely make it out. But, it's a Angel holding a heart close to 'it's' chest.

I like it. And it's a perfect mural for you.

That's basically the kind of color red I would like. And the Mural I make will probably be outlined in black or white, which ever would come out more.

Carpet, all I would need to do is measure and buy it. I can install that myself.

I would recommend studying color a little bit and the effects it will have on your mood (basic feng shui).

Color effects people, animals, bugs, etc. For example, have you ever been in a room that is painted lite blue. If there is a fly in it, it will move very slow.

Red is not a very soothing restful color. Most people spend 1/3 of their life in the bedroom. It should be a place that makes you want to relax, recouperate, regenerate.

I realize that recouperation is not the only reason for a bedroom but it is the main purpose.

To each his own! I hope that you have the bedroom of your dreams!
