When looking at a co-worker's Instagram story over the weekend, it had a little spoof flag with "Free Palentines" on it.

Had never heard of Palentines but didn't think he was likely to have mistyped Palestine. Googled it. There's apparently a holiday to recognize platonic love. It's variously observed on February 13th or 14th.

In this case, the guy was an avid baseball player in college and had some really close friends but is now in a near engagement with a gal here in town. But, the flag was overlaid on a poker game pic, so I think he was actually sorta serious. He looked low on chips, btw. :)

So, have you heard of it before? Have you ever observed it? I did a search on the site and could find no reference to it on JUB.

I have some friends who regularly celebrate Galentine's Day.

But, if the residents of Valencia are Valencians, wouldn't the residents of Palencia be Palencians?

I don't think the people of Valencia are referred to as Valentines, are they? Or is it arbitrary and simply allowed as variants in Latin?

Please don't tell me this is a way to keep from "shaming" the unattached.

If Valencian comes from "valenciano", then Palentine would be the equivalent of "palentino"

That never occurred to me. The engineer whose IG where I saw it is very much attached, and he wouldn't be of any PC ilk, nor particularly a thoughtful person in any altruistic way I ever observed.

My read was that it truly is about celebrating the love of friends. We don't have any big holiday for that, but it is a very real cherished value.

There are many, many posts on 9gag by men and youth who seem to not know how to make friends but value it and are somewhere between lonely and wistful.

Innocent enough. At least people might get an enjoyable dinner out of it, except for that uncomfortable moment just before dessert when they stopped to wonder what celebrating the love of friends might actually entail.

I suspect that, since there is no expectation to observe Palentine's Day, unlike St. Valentine's Day, that any observance of it is pretty free of trepidation. Anyone being asked out, or given anything, or invited, would know the expectation to be platonic, so not with attachments.

The guy I saw making the tongue-in-cheek reference to it was at a poker game. The joy friends share at a home game is pretty typical of male bonding. It's competitive, it's conversive, and there is usually beer and/or eats. That's a pretty good guy-date for straights.

Also, I doubt there is much emphasis on the actual day itself, only that anything might be planned this week and credited to it.

I'd like to see the name catch on and the thought. It's a nice way to say your friends mean something to you.

Of course there is always Palpatine's Day to look forward to after Palenine's.
