Paramount Reconsiders Star Trek Movie

By Gregory Michaels-Somer, Associated-Press Writer

Mon Jul 16, 8:34 PM ET

LOS ANGELES, California – Paramount this week has announced that the new Star Trek movie, due out next year is being reconsidered by studio executives.

This move was made Monday morning, when J.J. Abrams, the new director for the movie, was set to begin pre-production of the movie.

“The new Star Trek movie, has receive wide spread negative input.” Says Archer Powers of Paramount Studios, “We are reconsidering the idea of this movie, for many of our fans have said they are disappointed with the idea.”

StarTrek.com and other large fan base sites, have said that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, both widely successful spin-offs of the original, Star Trek, television series, need a movie.

“Everyone is beating the Kirk and Spoke storyline to death.” Says a fan known as Andrea, “We need to see what happens to Jeri Ryan’s character in Voyager or if Captain Sisko comes back to DS9 or not.”

When asked about possible other considerations for movies, Paramount had this statement, “We are looking into other ideas as of the moment, but as of now, this project is on hold.”

Star Trek, a 1970’s based Television show set in the 24th century, has had wide spread popularity over thirty years, and the last movie, Star Trek: Nemesis, which ended the final chapter in the Star Trek: The Next Generation series.

Director, J.J. Abrams, was not available for comment.

The only Star Trek Movie I'd go see would be if the Next Generation crew was in it.

The Shatner crew is far too old to do it again, not to mention several cast members are dead.

But the Picard crew is still young enough to make more movies.

The Voyager crew made it home in their Series finalle, so I don't see a movie with them in it.

YAAYYYY!!!!! This has totally made my day!

The movie they had planned was going to be abominable. I did not want to see Paramount wipe it's ass with the Star Trek franchise anymore. I can't believe they actually listened to the fans. Score one for us! (!)(!)(!)

Well, certainly, because we haven't seen enough of those...

and the ones we have seen have all been good <snark>

and they certainly haven't gotten enough movies in comparison to DS9 or VOY, who've gotten dozens... I mean we've been positively lambasted with movies with them...

But the Picard crew is still young enough to make more movies.

Sure. Young enough to saturate us with movies about them. Especially those of us who have had enough of them.

Well, luckily you're probably not the only person who's opinion they'll consider. Just because they're home, doesn't mean they can't come up with another idea for a Voyager movie. I noticed you didn't even mention DS9. I think it's only fair that they proceed in order. DS9 is next line for a movie, so I personally am *VERY* glad it looks like they're killing the prequel idea. Hasn't that been done to death already in so many other sci fi series in both TV and movies, and even other genres?

thank goodness!

i had my own doubts about this project since it first surfaced.

i would much prefer to see another tv show with a new story, cast, etc. than another film. but that's just me.

DS9 needs a movie but what would it be about.. sisko comming back ? Boring. VOyager sucked. and they already made it back SUX.. A new Generations movie that brings Data back is what they need. And i have the script. althought it's going throgth a MAJOR rewrite. anyway you can find it in my threads history.

- STAR TREK -
FINAL UNITY

VOyager sucked. and they already made it back SUX..

But they can have different, better, writing... and they could actually be bolder in a movie. Also, many of the TNG eps themselves might have been good, but the movies, with the exception of First Contact, were all predictable, dull, and pretty lacking in anything remotely interesting.

I loved Voyager, DS9, and TNG. But I agree...they need to do a DS9 movie before Voyager. :)

And this article was released on a Paramount forum.

I was going to start a thread on Voyager, but maybe I can just hi-jack this one...

I was just watching Voyager reruns...I really think that the next Trek movie should be based around that crew. They should have them follow in the vein of the first few Original movies - with Admiral Janeway having to steal Voyager and gather just the bridge crew for some purpose that Starfleet doesn't agree on. Maybe something to do with having to go back for Neelix or even another Borg-themed movie...perhaps Old Admiral Janeway didnt' successfully destroy the Borg in the Delta Quadrant and now they have future technology to attack Earth with.

Anyone else out there HUGE Voyager fans? I watch all 3 reruns I get on my cable stations everyday and sometimes pop in my fave eps on DVD. ..|

No shitty prequel is good. As long as they don't do an 'Enterprise' movie. I'll happily nuke the lot of them if they do.

They could do a movie based on DS9 which could include new characters and a plot line that could be turned into another series. That would kick ass!

They can send the Voyager crew back to the Delta Quadrant for all I care:p,but the DS9 angle would be really interesting.Especially As they made the utopian view of the Federation more realistic in terms of dealing with the less than admirable or noble things that people do,even in the best of motivations. It was the grittiest, most complex Trek....optimistic about what we can become, but knowing we always will need to struggle against our fears, weaknesses, and all human imperfections.

Anyway,I haven't seen anything that indicates the project isn't a go.in the last couple of weeks, they've been talking about the signing of Zachary Quinto from "Heroes" a younger Spock....bringing on a cameo from William Shatner as well as the one for Leonard Nimoy. What is the most current news about the project?

DS9 needs a movie but what would it be about..

What would a Deep Space Nine movie be about....hmmm well The Federation/Klingon/Romulan alliance defeated the shapeshifters...but what about the Breen? What about the alliance? and yeah Sisko too. Just because on war was put to and end doesn't mean things are peachy! Look at the Star Wars novels after the rebels destroyed the Empire. Something Bigger that the Empire keep in check came out of hiding and threaten the Galaxy.

Maybe the Borg come back, maybe we see the Breen as a few new allies. The skies the limit!

I want to see DS9 on the big screen. There was so many questions left unanswered in the final that I 'd like the answers too! :D

...But the Picard crew is still young enough to make more movies...

brent spiner has said several times that he wont do another movie and that he has visibly aged beyond being able to believable play an android. while i think it's ok that data ages (since they showed his robotic mom could age and that he aged in the last episode of TNG), mr spiner apparently doesn't think it's ok.

i really would love to see a DS9/Voyager movie. mix and match some of the cast i think would be fun and entertaining. i thought the idea of a prequel to TOS was stupid since the whole prequal series (Enterprise) didn't go over. i mean how dumb was that to do a prequal movie? i personally liked enterprise, and i'm even rewatching it now (up to season 2), but very few fans i think liked it (relatively speaking). i know the prequal was an early spock/kirk movie but i still dont think it would work.

so just my two cents, i'm glad they are reconsidering the idea.

Kind of glad they put it on hold, the pre-Star Trek series wasn't as successful as they hoped it would be, and I figured the same would happen with a pre-Star Trek movie.
But the whole DS9 and VOY movie idea doesn't seem all that great either. Like HartfordGuy points out, Voyager made it home, and they kind of cleared up the whole prophet/pauwhatever (evil wormhole aliens, can't think of what they are called now) thing at the end of DS9 so I don't see how they'll make a good story getting Sisko back (and they ended the war with the Dominion).
The idea of another TNG movie does sound good to me, but that's just because I prefer that series more than the others.
I also like piggyman's idea. That would be pretty interesting.
