Hi guys...need your help on what to do

When I start up my pc the following message appears (started a few days ago, before that there was no message) :

IDE Channel 1 no 80 conductor cable installed
IDE 0 slave Hard Disk S.M.A.R.T. status bad
Warning : Immediate back-up your data and replace your drive. A failure maybe be imminent

F1 to continue, Del to enter set-up

I press F1 and the PC starts up as usual and I can surf the net. Can I just ignore message or do I try to get message fixed. Please help me to decide what to do.

Thanks in advance
Vic

HD is 80GB.
I ran a Error check and after that message prompted that I have to reactivate Windows within 3 days. I dont understand..been using this Original Windows XP for 2 1/2 years and now asked to reactivate..???
I will take to shop shortly.

it sounds like your hard drive is failing. i would get a new hard drive, and use the accompanying software that comes with the new drive to to a image copy, basically so that all your stuff is copied exactly to your new hard drive. then take out the drive that is failing.

the one thing i am confused about though is that is shows a problem with the hard drive on each of the IDE channels. do you have 2 hard drives in your computer now?

i don't know on the activation thing...maybe something got messed up in windows when you had to run the error check.

at any rate, i would shut off the computer and not use it until you get a new drive and you are ready to copy the data....that is if you can get a new drive like tomorrow or something.

immediately back up any important and then all other data from the drive. if smart alerts you already during bootup something is very fucked up and it's highly likely that your drive will be failing very soon. your windows re-activation stuff might be the first sign of this already. DO not use the computer anymore before you can backup it!

Took cpu to shop to have it checked and they say its good.
Backed-up all important stuff. Will use laptop if this goes.
Thanks for all your replies

Have a good weekend.

 what?! what explanation did they give you for the messages you were getting? did they do something to fix it? are you still getting the error message?

there was something seriously wrong with your hard drive, they may have fixed it, but it wasn't "good" until they did. if they did nothing and you are still getting the error message, go back get your money back and you can take it somewhere else if you want.

I have all my important stuff backed up. Will get a new hard drive this weekend. I ran another error scan and performed a full system virus scan. PC seem to working fine. No more error messages. Will install new hard drive when the current on finally dies.

Thanks for all your support and advice.
