Ok, I met this guy on a online site and I realized shortly thereafter I have no idea what to do as a kind of first hangout/date thing.

I've been told not to do dinner (comes off too strongly) or a movie. Some people suggested Lunch but I'm not really a talking while eating kind of guy. Anyway I'm looking for ideas of places to go with various types of people my age (18-25) closeted or not.

Well, I usually go to Starbucks for all my first dates... If we have good chemistry, I might ask him if he wants to grab a bite... If I don't feel the chemistry, I won't ask him to go anywhere after coffee, and wish him a nice night.

you are right... movies are a really bad idea.

Don't overthink it. The scope is to get together to see if there's chemistry. Just about any venue where you can have a conversation is good.

How about picking up the phone and asking, "So, what kind of things do you enjoy doing?".

Already asked, I'm tallying the list of suggestions on here against the list I get from him+me and see what choice we might enjoy most that wont have unexpected problems (like a movie)

Or if you post some of his suggestions here, we might be able to help you come up with a fun and romantic twist on the things that he enjoys doing...

starbucks? really? it would be even more impressive if you just went to a cafe that wasn't a generic starbucks...

otherwise go for a beer or two, just make sure it's somewhere that is conducive to conversation.

Isn't it a bit unsafe to drink and drive?

PLUS... You have to be 21 years old to drink in the USA... our poster was born in 89... so, that ain't happening.

If you go to a cafe, you can't ask him if he wants to go get something to eat after your coffee meeting... (assuming everything is going well)

I don't recommend movies for a blind date (which is basically what you're talking about) because they pose all sorts of problems. First of all, you could end up at a movie that one of you loves and the other one hates, which isn't a good start. Secondly, you can't really talk at the movies, and thirdly, that much physical proximity can be a little awkward at such an early stage.
