Print your own Money legally

It reminds me of scrip. Where business pay their employees in money, but it can only be spent at the company store.

The downside is that those localities have to deal with their own counterfeiting problems. Making counterfeit-proof currency is not easy, and not cheap.

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that only the Treasury/Bureau of Engraving and Printing have the authority to issue and circulate currency.

@kevbo - fried beer??

Madison WI was also doing something like this back around 1990, but I can't find anything about it on the internet, so it must have been discontinued some time ago. I believe it was called "Madison Minutes" which was actually a labor-based local scrip currency for those who chose to participate.

They tried that in a town in the UK recently and it totally backfired. Tourists were keeping the money as souvenirs and some of it ended up on eBay being sold for 2-3 times more than its value so it skewed the whole micro-economy.

:(

That reminds me of the titty bar where we took my best friend for his bachelor party. The ATMs gave out fake bills that could only be spent at the club. A couple fo my friends took out $100 each, thinking that they could save themselves a trip to the ATM the next day. They were really pissed when they found out that they had to get $200 worth of lousy booze and lapdances before we left.

That's a great idea!!

EDIT: Thinking a little bit more, they will probably also take standard US currency as well. So would that mean if change is needed, it we be in US currency.
That's the way it works here. 1 Plenty=$20. Places that accept Plenty give change in US currency.

hmmm, this reminds me of the pullman car co. in early america times, and that didn't work well at all
