Private Message Etiquette

Whilst I accept that normal PMs probably shouldn't be posted in the open forum, I do think that unsolicited and uninvented correspondence (especially if abusive) should be considered fair-game and non-confidential and the cowardly arseholes should be named and shamed.

Even if it is unsolicited, it is still A Private message between you and the other person. Why drag it out and get everyone involved?? Chances are if the person is an asshole they will come out as that with other members as well. If they are being a total cunt and won't stop, then get the Mods involved. That is what I would do anyways. I think there is all ready enough drama here.

Now that my thread about the private message that I received from a member saying

has been pulled for no good reason by the prefects; I was advised by one of them that it is "bad form" to post private messages in a thread (I shall spare you, dear reader, from the rest of the patronising guff in the second PM).

There was a reason that I didn't press the Reporting Button - the reason being is that it is for knob-ends.

My question is:

Is it always unacceptable to share the contents of a PM on the open board?

Some clarification is needed.

As the actual intent of the original PM was probably intended as the authors attempt to suggest that when you died, you would be alone due to a lack of friends, and not intended as a threat it probably should not have been openly shared.

As to whether it is always unacceptable... Probably. Granted, there may be instances when a bit of information is best shared as it can lift others spirits. But the complete PM need not be posted for the whole community to nose through.

Any PM containing offensive/threatening messages would be best suited for posting in the ask the Mods area as they would then be able to take action to keep all members of the community safe.

I just assumed it is "always unacceptable" to post the contents of Private Messages on open forums.

Hence the name private message.

Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much. - Oscar Wilde

...but ignoring your enemies annoys them even more. ;)

If some jubber sent greaves a hateful, insulting PM along the lines of...

"May you be forced to watch Tom Cruise films, with Madonna singing on the sound-track, and only Simon Cowell for company for all eternity."

...it would be ignored, even though it is a far more frightening and threatening scenario than dying alone.

There would be no point in reporting it to the JUB mods, as most of them would probably think it was a definition of heaven rather than hell. ;)

And you should never give the oxygen of publicity to the demented idiot who sent the PM.

Having said which, greaves has never received an abusive PM in all his time on JUB, which says a lot about JUB and Jubbers.

I think that if someone wants to hide behind the "privacy" of pm's to send messages that would otherwise be ridiculed or lead to disciplinary action on the open forum, then they deserve to have their pathetic idiocy revealed. Far better than merely reporting it which would just lead to a private remonstration from the prefects. In the same way I believe that CCTV footage of criminals should not just be kept for the police, it should be shown in public as a deterrent to those involved and to those tempted to get involved.

If it means you get some more attention from your fellow JUBbers - positive and negative - as well as more attention from your beloved mods - mostly negative - then it's totally acceptable to share PMs with the rest of the class.

But you knew that. :)

Every child knows there's no such thing as bad attention.
