Hey guys,

23 year old male here. I've got a sitting job and I do tend to get dehydrated a lot. I never thought it would be a problem up until a month ago.

I was walking home when all of a sudden my pelvic area seems to go in electric shock every time I move (cold weather seemed to make it 10x worse since it was -31 Celcius) . Testicles, penis, prostate aching like there is no tomorrow. I checked into emergency at the hospital.

I had been screened for STI's a month before in expectation of my boyfriend coming to visit and we both were negative for everything. But then I'm starting to freak out.

Doctor checks me really quick and diagnoses prostatitis, gives me ciprofluxacin for 2 weeks. It did help a bit but I went to see my regular doctor a few days later since it was still hurting and he gave me Apo (anti-inflammatory meds) since he thought it was muscular.

So I was feeling a bit better with that, drinking a lot of water, sleeping and resting still it was hurting a few times a day (however never when urinating or ejaculating) but it was tolerable. My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time together here in the meantime

Then a week after he left (last week) I got and other attack that hurt. I went to see my doctor again who said my prostate was still inflated (however it did hurt less) and he gave me Apo-Doxy for 10 days that should kill off any infection he said (I'm on day 5 now). It's improved sensibly but it still hurts every once in a while, especially when I do certain movements or have to take a dump. Here's what I've been doing.

- Drinking lots of water
- Warm baths daily (twice when possible)
- Walking regularly
- No alchohol, chocolate or spicy foods
- Taking Apo-Doxy in morning and evening
- Zinc + Multivitamin at noon
- Lots of sleep
- Alternating every hour between standing up and sitting

It's really freaking me out because my boyfriend is moving close-by for a couple of months in 30 days and I want to be in top shape when he arrives. I'm so afraid I won't have recovered fully... I feel it's so unfair when everything was perfect in my life this lands on me...

I really could use advice from anyone who's been through it... thanks.

Hi ben. I, too, was about 23 when I contracted prostatitis. My symptoms were different from yours, though ... mainly uncomfortable ejaculation and brownish coloured semen that was also rather 'jelly-like' in texture. I was put on assorted courses of anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics over a period of months but nothing really seemed to help. It took about 6 months before it finally cleared up.

Sorry there's not much in the way of advice here, but you do seem to be doing all that you can do to deal with it in the way that it is affecting you. The causes of prostatitis are not completely understood and it is one of those conditions that is sometimes difficult to diagnose and treat, as the symptoms can vary considerably. In my case, it was mostly a matter of letting nature take its course. I'm a healthy 54 now and have never had a recurrence of the condition, so I hope that at least reassures you. (*8*)

Prostatitis is caused by a bacterial infection. There are several antibiotic treatments. Some antibiotics have very poor penetration of the prostatic capsule, others, such as Ciprofloxacin, Co-trimoxazole and tetracyclines penetrate well. Treatments usually take from 4-8 weeks.

Sounds like your doing all you can at the moment. If the antibiotic your not taking does not work see your doctor for other options mate.

Hopefully you will be okay when your bf arrives.

If the diagnosis is prostatitis, then the thngs that you are doing are the standard regimen.

There are two additional things that might be needed-
1. As WYSISYG indicated, it often takes a longer course of antibiotics to clear it up
2. Sexual frequency is sometimes an issue and can aggravate prostatitis. Try to get into a more consistent pattern of sexual activity and not have periods of little/no sex followed by these periods of lots of sex in a short time.

For some reason, some guys get inflammation of the prostate when there is a lot of sudden changes in sexual activity. It is a lot better if you have sex on a more consistent pattern.

So, if you suddenly you start having lots of sex, then you return to not having sex as often- it's not ususual for the prostate to get a little inflamed. This sounds like it might be part of your problem with your boyfriend's visits.

The male urinary tract likes consistency. So, try to have more regular sexual activity (masturbation included) and maybe take things a little slower when your boyfriend visits until this clears up.

I'm not big on natural remedies, but there is one, that I found, that works. It is Saw Palmetto (made from the berry). It comes in a capsule form at a health food store. I don't take it all the time. When I have a flare-up, I take it until I get some relief.
