I'd read that the 3.5 update (for playing 3D Blu-rays) for older PS3 consoles would crash it/lock it up.

I couldn't play "Apocalypse Now" Blu-ray because it wanted an update of encryption keys or some crap. I just installed it on an older (2007) PS3 and yes, I can confirm that it's ruined.

Sony wants a fee of $68 to 'fix' it. Or I could buy a new slim model.

I had not heard of this issue.

Unbelievable that an update could brick your console. And they want you to pay to fix their incompetence?

I would never buy anything from Sony again, if this happened to me.

I haven't bought or played any games in over a year so I won't be replacing or fixing their mistake.

I was using it for music and as a second Blu-ray player for the bedroom.

I'm looking at Blu-ray players at Best Buy and Sam's today. The one I have is a Sony and it works well. For now. Who knows what kind of countdown software they've installed to require an encryption key update someday, though.

There's really nothing anyone can do about it because you have to check "accept" to the terms before installing an update on just about everything.

They obviously don't care about an issue like this with older consoles. During 2008-2009 I purchased about $700 worth of games. If I were still playing them I'd pay to have it unlocked rather than spend $300 on a new console. But using it as a Blu-ray player I'd rather purchase something new and up to date.

The noisy fan on the thing required me to add a 15 foot HDMI cable to it so I could place the console in another room. They say they've quieted the fan with the new slim models. Funny how they never advertise any of these 'problems' but that's what Internet forums are for ;)

Thanks I have a 2008 version of the PS3 (Two USB ports, no SD media card ports) and I'm afraid to update my PS3. Is this a recent update? I remember my PS3 updating a while back for 3D Blu-Ray movies so I think I might already updated but I forget which update it is.

*NEW INFO*

I called sony and they fixed my PS3. It turns out that you must use your controller attached w/ USB cable when installing updates and I had been trying to use the remote control.

The 3.5 update finished installing and all is fine now.

Well that's good yeah I don't have a remote control for mine, I use the PS3 controller to move around my XMB. Glad to hear you got it fixed.

I'm buying Gran Turismo 5 on November 24th!! (!)

It looks awesome.

Actually, I pre-ordered it on Amazon and got release date delivery for only .99 cents
