Questions about Vista And Internet

Hey! So I were wondering a few things...

1. I need to change a name in System32>en-US , but it wont let me, now I have permissions for everything but it just wont let me change anything in that folder! So were wondering how to sort it out! I tired searching on search engines but couldnt find anything usefull.

2. Is there any way to speed up copying and pasting files? Just takes ages on Vista.

3. Right have a BT Home Hub, but the internet always sort of goes off, now when it does go off, my Azureus stays on and sitll downloads, but web pages wont load until its reset, wondering if anything can be done about that.

4. Random question but, is it possible to get viruses on Linux?

Not sure if you need ay extra infomation but if you do... im using...

ok here is what you do and it is possible to get a virus on almost anything that access the internet. your computer came with things that you may not use so try getting rid of some of those things. i recomend that DO NOT GET WINDOWS VISTA NOT NOW WAIT UNTIL SERVICE PACK 1 COMES OUT THIS IS FOR EVERYONE WHO READS THIS and your computer is updated you see microsoft gave out several updates that block certain changes on computers and those updates were built in windows vista update your antivirus. and your internet something could be wrong with your network try turning off your computer and unplug the internet cable or wifi wait 3 min plug it back up turn your internet on NOT YOUR COMPUTER wait 3 min then turn your computer on again restart it and you should have no problems if it continues let me know

Hey There!

Thanks for that, I am not to know right now as it hasnt gone off since ive wrote this as ive not left my computer for a while, so it hasnt gone off. Its more the fact I dont want it to go off when the computers left, as it happens daily.

But I am using Live OneCare so im hoping that its not microsofts own stuff doing it.

Oh and all those extra programs like Cyberlink and Acer Back Up I got rid of! There no use to me.

good im happy that your computers fine and live one care is a great protection iv been using it for a long time but your computer just has to get used running on windows vista make shure to clear your history sometimes sites can inflict damage on your computer and you may not even konw it take care

i still fully advocate only buying a computer with Vista already on it. People think its a shit OS because their computer wasnt powerful enough to handle it, when it works perfectly for me.

I think your misunderstanding how UAC is meant to be used, as do many people which is unfortunate. UAC is analogous to su, or running something as root. You do it when you need to change system settings or install applications and so on. However, if your application thinks it needs to access windows system files and folders and registry settings, and you dont trust it, you are suppose to use Vista's built in file and registry virtualization technology. That is vista makes a copy (delta) of file/registry settings that a program tries to access, but does not have the right privileges to do so. Thus changes can only hurt that program, effectively isolating all damage that could be done to the OS.

A Vista performance and reliability pack was released 2 weeks ago. It greatly improved copy+pasting files for me, plus it does a whole bunch of other things.

Oh and a quick question if anyone sees this...

Ever since an update (not the ones on here) has been put on, once every hourish, my screen just flickers for a few seconds? Wondering if anyone knows what that could be?

Oh and one more question (didn't want to start another thread so soon!)

So here goes...

So the computers turned on, it seems to load up, but then monitor goes off, just before the Windows XP splash screen comes up.

Now the computers still on but theres no screen. But its not the monitor as if you plug in another one (tried 3 different ones altogether) it still doesn't work.

And the only way to get it working again is to Reinstall Windows, as in to get rid of everything on computer and reload it from new.

Do any of you know why this could be?

All I know about the computer is, its got 512mb of RAM. Its Windows XP Home.

Be really grateful as its really annoying as its the only computer in the house that will put avi files to a disc.

Graphics card or on-board graphics? If it's a graphics card and it also has an on-board you could try unplugging the graphics card and using on-board. Or try another graphics card.
