I've had an upset stomach for ages but it usually got better as the day wore one. Now, my stomach stays in knots and I vomit quite often (yuck!). Can anyone recommend some foods or other home remedies or OTC meds that help with nausea? I've noticed that ice cream soothes my stomach for a while but it's not always convenient to carry it around. Phenergan works as well but it makes me sleepy.

Ummm....try a pregancy test first?

Dimenhydrenate (sp?) (AKA gravol) works for me.

Phoenix, if pregnancy was causing my nausea, I sure wouldn't request information on a gay male website. ;) I'm no breeder--I'm not pregnant.

Thanks for the suggestion of Dimenhydrenate. I think it's similar to Dramamine and I can pick some up after work.

Some say ginger calms the stomach. You can get it in capsules or just use the raw stuff at the grocery store if you can deal with the potency.

I take it you've already talked to a doctor about this? Prolonged upset stomach (esp. w/ vomiting) could be an indicator of something serious.

Hey, you'd be surprised at what some of us homos know about lady parts.

I always find the best and quickest remedy for nausea is to throw up.

The problem with most of the over-the-counter drugs for nausea (called anti-emetics) is that they cause significant drowsiness. This includes cyclizine (Marezein) and dimenhydrinate (Dramamine).

It's time that you see a doctor about your cramping, nausea and vomiting. It's not a normal symptom and you need to determine what the cause is.

I'm not looking for a medical diagnoses on a forum...that's as silly as people who expect legal advice via this method. I'm just interested in home remedy stuff. I have a physical every year and if I was concerned for my life, I'd take a day off and go to the doctor. Right now, I just need a band aid so to speak. I've always been nauseous in the mornings--for as long as I can remember. Now, it just continues through out the day and I have to vomit more. And I'm not cramping. I promise this isn't a girlie issue fellas.

I've never heard of ginger having a calming effect. I'll try that out. I have to skip on any meds that make a person drowsy. Thanks everyone for making suggestions!!

Again, you're not describing casually normal symptoms, but something chronic that is getting worse. You should get serious and start looking for specialist medical advice.

Maybe the drug, Promethazine (sp) that I was speaking of is called Phenergan. I can't remember.

You're correct. Promethazine is the generic name, Phenergan is the common brand name in the US.

The drug has a lot of side effects and a lot of people get profoundly drowsy when they take it.

I didn't provide you with a diagnosis but knowing the possible diagnoses, I am concerned that may have something significant going on that you should discuss with your physician.

But that is always your choice.

In addition to the wonderful advise some of my fellow jubbers have provided, I will pitch in my two cents:

Yes, Promethazine (aka Phenergan) is an anti-emetic (keeps you from throwing up), but commonly makes people very drowsy. Phenergan is a H1 inhibitor antihystamine much like benadryl, so you can see where the drowsiness comes into play.

On the list of anti-nausea medications that your doc can prescribe include a personal favorite, Ondansetron (Zofran). It really cuts out the nausea and does NOT make people drowsy.

Ultimately though, your best bet would be to treat the actual cause of the nausea and vomiting, rather than the symptoms themselves. Over time, recurrent vomiting and reflux can damage the lining of the esophagus, leading to ulcerations and a host of oral problems, like dental softening (from the acid) and discoloration. Plus, I can't think of anyone who would want to live with intractible nausea and vomiting nearly every day... what a horrible feeling.

Heres to hoping you make the decision to see a gastroenterologist, or at least a general practitioner, and start on the road to finding out whats going on.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Peppermint. Along with ginger you've got yourself two nice, natural antiemetics. Try gingerale and some peppermint candies.

Uh, I know you're looking for a band aid. But I would second those that say a trip to the doctor would be well advised in this case. Not to mention, different drugs are better at treating N/V of different causes so it's hard to say for sure what would work for you. I could go through a whole list, but that wouldn't be very helpful. Many have been mentioned but there are many many many out there. The ones I know are primarily perscription meds. But again, prolonged N/V is not something you should ignore for too long.

If this is prolonged I would seek advise from a medical doctor.

Otherwise usually a stomach bug is like 24-48 hours and goes away. It's very rare that I get something like that, but when it happens it feels like someone is punching me in the gut.

What I do is eat lite, dry toast, tea (with peppermint) or plain. Ginger Al works in my case. Gradually I will eat lite soups chicken noodle, etc.

Even if you get a physical every year, something could pop up, don't be foolish, if it has not gone away by now get to a doctor.

Quick n easy relief of nausea - hmmm ginger and peppermint. Peppermint tea slowly sipped helps as does plain ginger tablets or a simple infusion. Besides that its medication either tablet supp or patch.
