Wes Craven Dies: Veteran Director Of ‘Scream,’ ‘Nightmare On Elm Street’ Was 76

From his first feature film The Last House On The Left as writer, director and editor in 1972, Craven made his mark as a genre-bending, bracingly innovative horror director with a biting sense of humor. Craven also consistently demonstrated that he was a filmmaker with heart.

Craven reinvented the youth horror genre again in 1984 with the classic and very scary A Nightmare On Elm Street, which also introduced a then-unknown Johnny Depp. The movie spawned several sequels, most of them directed and written by others.

In 1996 Craven experienced a rebirth in horror with the release of Scream, which was written by Kevin Williamson. Scream sparked multiple sequels and spoofs.

One of the last projects Craven worked on was MTV’s series adaptation of Scream, on which he served as executive producer. The series was recently renewed for a second season. “Wes Craven was a tremendous visionary whose sensibility for scares has connected with generations of MTV fans,” MTV said in a statement. “We are honored to have worked with him and proud to carry on his legacy with Scream. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

I was shocked to read this when I got home tonight.....the man was a cinematic genius

He will be missed.

When I first saw Last House on the Left I was taken back on how fucked up the movie was, it was when I first started to get into film and some of the older horror films. Movie left a huge impression on me.

I wasn't huge on the Nightmare on Elm Street series, but the idea behind it is still one of the best and most imaginative when it comes to horror.

Scream was definitely the best slasher movie of its time, not that it had any real competition but it was a slasher movie that worked really well because even though it was using the cliches of the genre it was making fun of them in a clever way.

Definitely going to be watching a few of his films over the week.

I was shocked when I heard this news. The Scream series and the Nightmare on Elm Street are some of my favourite movies. He will be missed. :(

Wes Craven's New Nightmare was, in my opinion, by far his best movie.

In fact, it was one of the most significant contributions to the horror genre in movie history, even more so than 'A Nightmare on Elm Street', in my opinion.

It's one of the few movies EVER to explore the question: Why do I like this? And what effect does my enjoyment from this movie have on those who make it?

I'll always ponder that question.

Rest in peace. His movies were enjoyable if you loved horror. Last house on the left the original one was crazy.

I loved all those scary funny Scream movies. Well at least the first one.

I am saddened by his passing.

I never really like horror until I watched "Scream". Since then, I have grown to appreciate the horror genre.

I like "A Nightmare on Elm Street", "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors", "Scream" and "Scream 2".
